Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium cleared to host matches again
After months of speculation and administrative hurdles, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru has been granted conditional clearance to host IPL and international matches once again. The decision, confirmed through an official press note by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), ends a long period of uncertainty following last year’s tragic stampede that halted all top-flight cricket at the venue.
KSCA’s formal statement expressed both relief and responsibility: “The permission is subject to compliance with specific terms and conditions prescribed by the Government and the concerned authorities. KSCA is confident of fulfilling all the stipulated conditions. The Association has already presented a detailed compliance roadmap before the Expert Review Committee and remains fully committed to implementing all safety, security, and crowd-management measures in letter and spirit.”
The association, led by new president Venkatesh Prasad, has been working to bring the stadium back into active rotation, especially with the IPL 2026 season fast approaching. Their renewed effort aligns with the aspirations of the new KSCA leadership.
In an official statement, KSCA spokesperson Vinay Mruthyunjaya confirmed the approval: “We are pleased to inform you that the Home Department, Government of Karnataka, has granted permission to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to host international and IPL matches at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.”
He further explained the urgency driving their preparations: “Whatever recommendations were made by the Justice Michael D’Cunha Commission and whatever the Home Department wanted, the new committee is working round the clock to address them,” Mruthyunjaya told Deccan Herald.
With crowd safety at the heart of the issue, KSCA had been barred from hosting even domestic fixtures after the stampede that claimed 11 lives during RCB’s IPL title celebrations in June 2025. The association’s focus now is to restore public confidence and meet the safety benchmarks laid out by the Expert Review Committee.
Mruthyunjaya emphasized that bringing international cricket back to the stadium had always been their top goal: “Our main agenda before we got elected was to get international cricket back at Chinnaswamy, and this is the first step towards achieving that,” he told Deccan Herald.
RCB steps in with AI surveillance plan amid venue uncertainty
While KSCA works toward meeting compliance standards, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has taken proactive steps to address the core issue—crowd safety. The franchise issued an official media release proposing the installation of 300 to 350 AI-powered surveillance cameras at Chinnaswamy Stadium, committing to a one-time investment of ₹4.5 crore (approx. US$0.5 million).
According to the media statement, “The advanced surveillance technology will empower the KSCA and law enforcement agencies to efficiently manage crowd movement, ensure disciplined queueing, monitor unauthorised access through real-time tracking of entries and exits, and significantly enhance overall fan safety.”
RCB’s offer comes at a time when their home venue status remains unconfirmed. With the IPL set to begin in March, the franchise has reportedly considered backup venues such as Raipur and Pune if Chinnaswamy does not receive final approval in time.
Their media release also detailed the financial commitment: “RCB has further committed to bearing the entire one time cost of this initiative, estimated at approximately 4.5 crore.”
The system being proposed goes beyond simple monitoring, offering high-end analytics and rapid threat identification. “The solution leverages advanced analysis of video, audio and text data to accelerate investigations and enable faster, more accurate decision-making,” the release stated.
RCB highlighted how this real-time surveillance could transform security response during large events: “Its real-time AI video analytics capability enables early detection of incidents such as violence, unauthorised access and intrusion, facilitating swift and effective law-enforcement response,” the release added.
Franchise officials believe the integration of such a solution would significantly enhance the in-stadium experience: “The integration of this advanced technology will elevate crowd management standards and reinforce a safe, secure and seamless matchday experience for all fans,” the franchise added in its release.
They’ve also revealed their partnership with Staqu, a tech firm with experience in law enforcement support: “RCB has partnered with Staqu, a technology company with a proven track record in enhancing public safety through automation and data-driven intelligence. Staqu’s state-of-the-art facial recognition technology and intelligent monitoring of objects, crowd, perimeters and vehicles has assisted many State Police forces in their regular monitoring and investigations,” the release concluded.
