New Zealand — Former BLACKCAPS batter and coach Craig McMillan has been officially appointed as the full-time assistant coach of the WHITE FERNS, solidifying his role just over a year after initially joining the team on a part-time basis.
McMillan’s new role will focus on the WHITE FERNS’ batting and fielding departments, working closely alongside head coach Ben Sawyer and assistant Dean Brownlie. His appointment takes effect immediately and will see him dedicate his efforts solely to the national women’s team and the female Players of Interest (POI) programme.

The move comes after McMillan’s successful stint with the side during their 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup title win in the UAE. In stepping away from his commentary work and other coaching roles, McMillan is now fully focused on helping the WHITE FERNS prepare for a busy year ahead.
“I’m over the moon to be in this role with the WHITE FERNS,” said McMillan. “The women’s game is going from strength to strength, and I’m excited to continue to work with our talented players and help them reach their goals.”
He added, “The last year has gone so quickly and I’ve loved every minute of being part of a team that continues to improve, challenge one another, and does special things on the world stage.”
Focus shifts to 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup
With the 50-over Women’s World Cup in India fast approaching in October–November, McMillan confirmed the team’s preparations are in full swing.
“It’s been a busy period leading into the World Cup,” he said. “We’ve had a number of camps including one in Chennai which exposed the players to Indian conditions like what they’ll face later this year.”
The WHITE FERNS are expected to announce their official World Cup squad on September 10.
McMillan’s full-time appointment is seen as a strategic move by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to bolster coaching resources and continuity ahead of a major global tournament.
With a proven track record in international coaching and a World Cup win already under his belt, McMillan’s expanded role adds experience and leadership to a squad determined to make a deep run in India.
