With the IPL 2025 season now officially set to resume on May 17, following a week-long suspension due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, the focus has turned to the uncertain return of overseas players—particularly Australians. But Cricket Australia (CA) has taken a clear stance: players will face no pressure to go back.
“In that light, this masthead has been told that CA will defend the rights of players to make their own calls about returning to the IPL on a case-by-case basis, taking the view that their decisions should not be held against them for the future,” read a statement in The Age report.
Several Australian players, including Marcus Stoinis and Mitchell Starc, had returned home when the tournament was paused. Upon arrival, Stoinis offered a brief update: “Everyone is fine,” while Starc chose not to speak with media.
Players caught between IPL and national duty
With the IPL now set to resume this Friday and franchises asking players to reconvene at team bases by Tuesday, uncertainty still hangs over which Australians will return. Their decision is complicated not just by safety concerns, but also by upcoming national commitments—chiefly, the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa starting June 11.
The IPL final is now scheduled for June 3, giving players even less time to rest, reunite with family, or prepare before heading to the UK for the WTC final.
Additionally, CA’s original no-objection certificates (NOCs) for IPL participation were only valid until May 25—the tournament’s original end date. Players wishing to rejoin will need fresh approvals from CA to remain with their IPL teams through the new schedule.
Uncertainty looms as deadline nears
CA’s support may prove critical in easing the pressure on players. The governing body’s assurance that their future IPL prospects won’t be impacted regardless of their choice could help players navigate a complex and time-sensitive decision.
With the May 17 restart just days away, Australian cricketers are left to weigh IPL contracts, personal safety, and looming international obligations in a tight and demanding cricket calendar.
