JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has officially appointed Patrick Moroney as the new Convenor Selector for the Proteas Men’s Team, marking a strategic move to strengthen national team selection and development.
Moroney brings over two decades of experience to the role, having started his selector journey in 2001. He has served in key positions such as Director of Sport and Marketing at the high school level and played critical roles in South African cricket’s Youth Men Talent Identification Programme. He also served as the Lions Cricket Convenor of Selectors, among other important appointments.
Previously, Moroney has held the title of Convenor of Selectors for SA National Academy, SA Emerging, and the South Africa Men’s U19 team, further emphasizing his deep involvement in developing young cricket talent across the country.
From 1 August 2025, Moroney will formally take up his duties at CSA’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Pretoria, reporting directly to Enoch Nkwe, CSA’s Director of National Teams and High Performance. He will also work closely with the Proteas Men’s Head Coach to guide selection decisions at the highest level.
Strategic focus on youth and high performance
CSA emphasized that Moroney’s track record in talent identification and high-performance environments aligns perfectly with the organization’s renewed focus on long-term player development and succession planning within the men’s national setup.
Enoch Nkwe stated:
“CSA is extremely proud to welcome Patrick into this pivotal role as Convenor Selector for the Proteas Men’s Team. His deep understanding of the game, combined with decades of experience in talent identification and selection across various levels, makes him the ideal person for the job.”
Nkwe added that he looks forward to seeing the “positive impact” Moroney will bring, as CSA continues to evolve its high-performance strategy and team-building roadmap leading into key ICC events.
Proteas rebuild continues under strategic appointments
With this appointment, CSA continues to fine-tune the leadership and selection apparatus surrounding the Proteas men’s team, following recent investments in coaching, analytics, and player welfare.
Moroney’s strong history in youth development pathways is expected to boost the team’s future readiness, particularly in identifying emerging talent and ensuring a strong bench for future international competitions.
The appointment signals CSA’s commitment to blending experience with strategic foresight as it reshapes the national team structure in the post-2025 cycle.
