Cricket South Africa (CSA) has made a significant U-turn, now allowing its Test players selected for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final to participate in the IPL 2025 playoffs, reversing a firm stance announced just a day earlier.
Initially, CSA insisted that all players selected for the WTC final return from the IPL by May 26, ahead of the June 11 final against Australia. The board had emphasized the need for sufficient preparation time, with training scheduled to begin May 31.
However, after discussions with the BCCI and IPL franchises, CSA has backtracked, now permitting its stars to remain with their IPL teams through the playoffs, which start on May 29, with the final set for June 3.
The initial hardline: CSA prioritizes WTC final over IPL
CSA’s director of national teams and high performance, Enoch Nkwe, had initially reiterated the board’s strict position, stating that player availability for the WTC final was non-negotiable.
“It is an individual decision, obviously, to return or to play or continue. One thing we’ve made clear, and we are finalising this with the IPL and the BCCI, is sticking to our original plan when it comes to the WTC preparations.”
He also confirmed the hard deadline:
“May 26 is the latest for the Test guys to come back. The original plans don’t change because the No. 1 priority is the WTC final. We’ve been engaging with them over the last day or two to make sure we’re all on the same page.”
This firm stance was based on an earlier IPL 2025 schedule, with the final originally set for May 25. But tensions between India and Pakistan forced the tournament’s postponement by a week, shifting the IPL final to June 3—just eight days before the WTC final in London.
Sudden shift: CSA now delays WTC camp to June 3
Following high-level talks, West Australian Today reported that CSA softened its position and pushed back the WTC preparation start date by three days. Nkwe acknowledged the change and deferred to senior leadership:
“Correction – the squad will resume training for the game on June 3rd,” he said. “The matter is being discussed higher up than me. At ground level, we are focusing on preps for the WTC final.”
This reversal opens the door for all eight Proteas players involved in the IPL to stay with their franchises into the playoffs.

Eight members of South Africa’s WTC squad are currently participating in IPL 2025, many of whom are crucial to their respective franchises’ playoff hopes:
