Delhi Capitals are assembling a new-look coaching staff for IPL 2027, with former Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas set to take charge of the franchise’s fast-bowling unit and former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra joining as Spin Coach, according to reports by Sportstar and Cricinfo.
The pair will form part of a wider restructuring that will reportedly see former India Captain Sourav Ganguly take over as Head Coach and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh join as Assistant Coach. The appointments have yet to be formally announced by the franchise.
Vaas and Mishra begin work in Delhi
Vaas and Mishra have already linked up with the Capitals in Delhi and begun working with academy players as the franchise starts laying the groundwork for its next IPL campaign.
For Vaas, the appointment will mark his first coaching role in the IPL, although he previously represented Deccan Chargers as a player during the competition’s first three seasons between 2008 and 2010.
The former Sri Lanka international brings extensive experience from both international and franchise coaching. His work with Sri Lanka has included multiple spells with the national set-up as well as roles focused on fast-bowling development and identifying emerging talent.
Vaas has also worked beyond Sri Lankan cricket, including an early coaching assignment as a consultant with New Zealand and a stint with Ireland around the 2016 T20 World Cup. More recently, he coached NYS Lagos in the 2024 Zim Afro T10 and served as Head Coach of Kandy Royals in the 2026 Lanka Premier League.
His playing career included 111 Tests and 322 ODIs for Sri Lanka, producing 355 Test wickets and 400 ODI wickets. He was also part of the Sri Lankan squad that won the 1996 Cricket World Cup.
Mishra moves from IPL player to coach
Mishra will make his own transition into IPL coaching after a playing career that stretched across most of the tournament’s history.
The leg-spinner represented Delhi Daredevils, now Delhi Capitals, as well as Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants. He played his final IPL match for Lucknow in 2024 before retiring the following year.
Mishra finished with 174 wickets from 162 IPL matches at an economy rate of 7.37. He also remains the only bowler to have taken three IPL hat-tricks, having claimed the first of them during his debut season in 2008.
His return to the Delhi organisation now gives the Capitals a specialist spin-coaching presence alongside Vaas’ fast-bowling responsibilities.
Ganguly to lead revamped coaching team
The changes extend well beyond the bowling department. Ganguly is set to replace Hemang Badani as Head Coach, putting the former India Captain at the centre of Delhi’s new coaching structure.
Singh will work alongside Ganguly as Assistant Coach. While Singh has limited formal coaching experience, he has previously worked closely with Indian players including Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill.
The incoming group represents a significant change from the staff that oversaw the Capitals during the 2025 and 2026 seasons, when Badani served as Head Coach, Venugopal Rao as Director of Cricket and Munaf Patel as Bowling Coach.
Ownership cycle drives Delhi Capitals changes
The overhaul comes within the operating arrangement established between Delhi Capitals co-owners GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and JSW Sports after IPL 2024.
Under that agreement, control of franchise operations alternates between the two ownership groups in two-year cycles. GMR oversaw the appointments of Rao, Badani and Patel for the 2025 and 2026 campaigns, with the Capitals now preparing to move into the next phase of that arrangement.
With Ganguly and Singh set to lead the wider coaching operation and Vaas and Mishra strengthening the specialist bowling structure, Delhi Capitals are preparing to enter IPL 2027 with a substantially reshaped support staff. None of the four appointments has yet been officially announced by the franchise.
