Desert Vipers are edging closer to remaining in the ILT20 after renewed discussions between the franchise and league officials, easing concerns over the future of one of the competition’s six teams, according to Cricbuz journalist Vijay Tagore.
The latest development marks a significant shift after uncertainty surrounded the defending champions’ participation in the league’s fifth season. While neither the franchise nor the ILT20 has publicly commented on the discussions, the two sides are understood to be close to an agreement that would allow the Vipers to continue in the competition.
Talks appear to have changed the direction
The progress follows fresh engagement between the two parties after a prolonged disagreement over the league’s business model.
As previously reported by cricexec, Desert Vipers had informed ILT20 officials of their intention to leave the competition after failing to resolve differences that had persisted for nearly two years. Those concerns centred on the commercial structure of the league, with the franchise believing the existing model was no longer commercially sustainable.
The latest discussions appear to have reopened a path towards a resolution, with senior representatives from both sides involved in negotiations. While the precise terms of any agreement remain unclear, the discussions have reduced the prospect of the defending champions departing before the new season.
Stability would be a boost for the league
A successful outcome would remove the need for the ILT20 to find a replacement franchise ahead of the fifth edition, which is scheduled to begin on November 22.
When the possibility of Desert Vipers leaving first emerged, contingency planning had already become a consideration given the limited time available before the new campaign. The league had also established relationships with the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation and Kuwait Cricket, which could have provided alternative pathways had a vacancy needed to be filled.
With negotiations now progressing positively, those contingency plans appear less likely to be required.
Defending champions continue preparations
Despite the uncertainty surrounding their long-term future in the competition, Desert Vipers have continued their cricket operations without interruption.
The franchise has continued its regular activities while competing in the Global Super League in Guyana. Led by Shadab Khan, the side recovered from opening the tournament with two consecutive defeats to finish its campaign with back-to-back victories, including a one-wicket win over Perth Scorchers with one ball to spare in its final match. Desert Vipers ended the league stage with two wins and two losses, finishing third on the points table with four points as they await the remaining results to determine whether they progress to the next stage.
The Vipers remain the only ILT20 franchise owned by non-Indian promoters, with Lancer Capital and Avram Glazer behind the club.
Attention turns to the new season
Attention will now shift towards whether the expected agreement is finalised before preparations for the fifth season gather pace.
The ILT20 has confirmed that its Season 5 player auction will take place on October 1, before the tournament begins on November 22. Should the discussions conclude successfully, the league would be able to move into the new campaign with all six existing franchises remaining in place, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty over the future of its reigning champions.
