The unseen drama behind IPL auction planning

Dinesh Karthik has offered a rare look into the nerve centre of IPL decision-making, describing Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s auction build‑up as an experience so dramatic and action-packed that it could easily become long-form entertainment. His reflections capture the emotional intensity, strategic depth, and camaraderie that defined days of preparation — according to a video shared by RCB on X (formerly Twitter).

Reflecting on the volume of discussions that went into the planning, he noted how extraordinary it would look if fans could witness it firsthand. “If the world gets to see the whole footage of what all we speak and what all we discuss, they can do a mega serial, I feel. They can do a 10-part TV series on it.”

Inside the 10-day sprint that shaped RCB’s strategy

Karthik described the days leading into the auction as unlike anything he had previously experienced, even after years of international cricket. The combination of strategic planning, deep analysis, and team collaboration transformed the lead‑up into a testing yet energising journey.

“It was the most exhilarating 10 days prior to the auction, the way we prepped. I don’t think I’ve gone through an experience like that. I’ve played a lot of cricket, but to be in the boardroom discussing what it takes to make a team was the most challenging, most fun, engaging week, 10 days I’ve had because there was so much prep that went into it. Mo and Andy have a very detailed process that they go through.”

Despite days stretching to 12 and even 14 hours, he stressed that the thrill of being part of the core planning group kept him deeply invested. “And I thoroughly enjoyed every second of being in that room. At times, it was tiring because we had 12-hour, 14-hour days. I really enjoyed every second. I would do anything to have the same kind of experience in the lead-up to an auction.”

Mini-auction vs mega auction: a different kind of excitement

Karthik drew a clear distinction between the current mini-auction and the earlier mega auction, acknowledging that the scale of the latter delivered unmatched anticipation.

“This is a mini auction, very different. I must admit that the week in the lead-up to the mega auction was exciting.”

Even so, the complexity of decision-making remained intense. Evaluating players, understanding squad balance, and aligning strategic goals demanded meticulous attention.

The mental challenge behind player assessment

According to Karthik, the real difficulty lies in navigating the range of skills, personalities, and tactical possibilities represented by hundreds of players. The volume of variables involved created a mentally absorbing and highly detailed selection process.

“So many names, so many skill sets, how are you going to line up the team, giving your inputs, seeing what matters. So many things come into play and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

He elaborated on the layers of decision-making that go far beyond simply liking a player’s talent. “But it’s very interesting, intriguing and mentally challenging because you’re assessing various things. A- the skill set. B- what does it take to be part of a team? But most importantly, the auction order. Where does the player come from? Will we bid for him? If we bid, how far we go? What we need to do? So it is a very intricate process, very challenging process and that’s the thrill in an auction.”

Competition, strategy and ten teams chasing perfection

Karthik emphasised that once the auction room fills with all ten franchises, the atmosphere becomes a sophisticated battleground of strategy rather than mere one‑upmanship. Each team arrives with its vision, hoping to secure the perfect combination of talent and balance.

“Because when you go sit in an auction, there are 10 tables there and each one wants to get their best team with the best players lined up. And it’s not about out-thinking at times; it is about understanding what strategy you want and what you want to make sure you achieve.”

A reunion that brought renewed energy

Even amid the analytical intensity, Karthik expressed a heartfelt enthusiasm for being back among his colleagues. The auction build‑up served as a reunion of key minds within RCB’s cricket operations — a moment he had eagerly awaited.

“At the same time, enjoying this whole process because I was looking forward to coming back. Just seeing everybody back together in the ground was such a nice feeling. Last night, to be fair, I didn’t sleep much. I was very excited to see Andy, Malo, Mo, all of them together.”

Karthik’s reflections offer a rare, humanising perspective on IPL auction strategy — a world usually hidden behind closed doors. His words reveal not only the pressure and precision required but also the passion and joy that fuel the process.
