Dubai, 25 August 2025: The DP World ILT20 Development Tournament returned for its third edition this week at the ICC Academy in Dubai, offering a crucial platform for emerging cricket talent in the UAE. David White, CEO of DP World ILT20, emphasized the tournament’s growing stature and its role in nurturing future stars for the main league and national team.
“It’s a great opportunity for these young men to stake a claim to be selected in the full tournament,” said White. “Last year, there was a big improvement in the standard, and I’m sure it’s going to be even higher again this year.”
Platform for player development and pathway to global stage
The Development Tournament serves as a feeder system for DP World ILT20 Season 4, which runs from 2 December 2025 to 4 January 2026. White noted that many players who excelled in previous editions have gone on to compete in the main league.
“Not only their skills, but also their attitude, their strength and conditioning, the whole level of professionalism has increased,” White added. “Playing in front of cameras, with live streaming, adds both pressure and incentive.”
UAE talent in spotlight ahead of DP World ILT20 Season 4 Player Auction
The development tournament gains added significance this year with the DP World ILT20 Season 4 Player Auction set to take place just after the Asia Cup 2025. Franchises are required to include a minimum of two UAE players in their playing XI, making performances in the development tournament critical for selection.
“If they get selected in one of the franchise teams, they’ll not only participate in the league but also train with world-class coaches,” said White, underscoring the tournament’s long-term value for UAE cricket.
ILT20’s growing global relevance and festive scheduling
White also commented on the overall success and growing prestige of the DP World ILT20 in the global T20 ecosystem.
“The league last year really stepped up. We’re now mainstream, and we’re a league that’s growing. When people talk about the big leagues around the world, they talk about DP World ILT20 as well,” he said.
The festive season schedule—spanning December and early January—adds marketing potential and is expected to draw large holiday crowds.
“December and early January is a tremendous time for us,” White noted. “It gives us an opportunity to market over the Christmas and New Year period… the crowds will be big, and it will give a real focus for cricket in this region.”
Boosting UAE cricket and Asia Cup readiness
White credited the ILT20 with strengthening the UAE national team, which now qualifies for tournaments like the Asia Cup.
“The UAE team have increased their depth. They now qualify for the Asia Cup and have the ability to beat any team on the day,” said White. “What’s exciting is that Afghanistan, Pakistan and UAE have had a lot of experience playing in the DP World ILT20 in these conditions.”
