Unified Olympic team discussions underway as cricket returns to Games after 128 years
Cricket Scotland and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have entered preliminary discussions to form a unified British cricket team under the Team GB banner for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will return to the Games for the first time since 1900.
The proposal aligns with requirements from the British Olympic Association (BOA), which governs Olympic participation for England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Unlike ICC events, which allow these nations to compete separately, the Olympic format mandates a single unified team for participation.
“Team GB cricket entity” under development
“We have a really good working relationship with the ECB, so we have been in talks with them and (we’re) in the process of establishing a Team GB cricket entity,” said Cricket Scotland CEO Trudy Lindblade in an interview with the BBC.
Lindblade confirmed that forming a unified team is a necessary condition for eligibility: “That’s what’s required by the British Olympic Association (BOA) for a British team to compete at the Olympic Games.”
Qualification and selection remain unclear
While the formation of a Team GB cricket side would fulfill eligibility criteria, Lindblade cautioned that many questions remain about tournament qualification and squad composition.
“There’s a lot to come in terms of how qualification takes place, not just for those six teams but how — if a GB team were to qualify — we have selection within that,” she said.
The International Cricket Council (ICC), in conjunction with the LA28 organizing committee, is still finalizing the format of the men’s and women’s six-team T20 tournaments, along with details around Olympic qualification and commercial frameworks.
Collaborative talks with ICC and LA28 organizers
Lindblade emphasized the proactive role Cricket Scotland is taking in discussions not just with the ECB but also with global stakeholders. “We’ll continue to liaise with the ECB and our colleagues at LA 2028 and ICC,” she said.
She described the developments as “exciting times,” reflecting growing optimism across the UK cricket landscape about Olympic participation.

The inclusion of cricket at the LA 2028 Olympics offers the UK a unique opportunity to showcase the sport to new audiences under the global spotlight. A unified Team GB cricket side would also mark an unprecedented collaboration among cricket boards that typically compete independently on the world stage.
While governance, player selection, and branding logistics remain to be resolved, the early-stage talks reflect strong intent from both Cricket Scotland and the ECB to secure British representation at this historic event.
The ICC has made Olympic cricket a strategic priority, not just for 2028 but also for future Games, including Brisbane 2032. For UK boards, LA28 represents both a logistical challenge and a high-profile platform to grow cricket’s appeal worldwide.
