Eoin Morgan has emerged as a potential candidate to become Chennai Super Kings’ next Head Coach as the five-time IPL champions consider how to replace Stephen Fleming following the end of his 18-year association with the franchise. Ravichandran Ashwin has indicated that Morgan’s name is being discussed strongly around the position, while MS Dhoni could remain central to how CSK navigate the transition.
CSK are searching for a new Head Coach after Fleming departed following IPL 2026, when the franchise finished eighth with 12 points. His exit closed a partnership that delivered five IPL titles before Fleming subsequently became Head Coach of England’s men’s Test team.
Morgan emerges as a potential CSK option
Morgan would bring extensive leadership experience but no previous Head Coach experience at international or franchise level. Since retiring from professional cricket in 2023, the former England Captain has worked as a commentator.
The 39-year-old represented both Ireland and England in ODI cricket, making his Ireland debut in August 2006. He later captained England to their maiden ODI World Cup title in 2019 and also led Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2021 IPL final, where KKR were beaten by CSK.
Discussing CSK’s coaching situation, Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube channel: “I have a feeling Eoin Morgan might be coming… His name is doing the rounds strongly…; early discussions are on, no doubt. In this, two scenarios: Eoin Morgan- will he take it this year? Or someone else builds the team in a mini auction, and he takes it later?”
The timing of any appointment is particularly significant because the next IPL mega auction is a year away. That leaves CSK weighing not only who should succeed Fleming, but whether its longer-term coaching direction should be established immediately or around the next major opportunity to reshape the squad.
Dhoni could remain central to CSK transition
Dhoni remains an integral figure within CSK despite having handed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad after leading the franchise to its fifth IPL title in 2023. His continued presence gives CSK an experienced leadership figure as the franchise works through its first Head Coach change in nearly two decades.
Ashwin added: “I have a strong hunch that under Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together… Personally, that route is the correct one. I still think so. Because the appointment will be a touch late. Because the mega auction is only one year away. … My strongest hunch is that under MS Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together. That’s my strongest hunch for at least the next one year.”
That combination of an immediate coaching vacancy and a mega auction on the horizon creates two distinct timelines for CSK. The franchise must manage its current squad and upcoming personnel decisions while also considering the leadership structure it wants in place when a broader rebuild becomes possible.
Coaching vacancy intersects with IPL trade window
The more immediate issue is the ongoing IPL trade window, where decisions made before a new Head Coach arrives could affect the squad that person inherits.
Ashwin stated: “It must be remembered that the trade window is ongoing. And CSK are still without a coach.”
CSK have been linked with potential player movement involving Hardik Pandya, Khaleel Ahmed and Shivam Dube. A new Head Coach could have a different assessment of existing players and therefore a different view of which trades would strengthen the franchise.
He added: “This makes discussing trade deals very hard. While there are rumours about a Hardik Pandya trade for Khaleel Ahmed and Shivam Dube, the incoming coach might feel he could extract the best out of Khaleel or Dube. Let’s not forget that Dube has played in beast mode for CSK two to three years back.”
CSK faces defining post-Fleming decision
Replacing Fleming represents a significant change for a franchise whose coaching structure remained remarkably stable across much of its IPL history. The decision also arrives after a difficult IPL 2026 campaign, increasing the importance of CSK establishing its direction ahead of the next season.
Morgan’s candidacy would offer CSK a former World Cup-winning Captain with IPL leadership experience but no previous coaching track record. At the same time, Dhoni’s continued role gives the franchise an established leadership presence while it determines how and when to make its longer-term appointment.
With the trade window already active and the next mega auction a year away, CSK’s choice of Head Coach will be closely connected to both its immediate squad decisions and the next phase of its rebuild.
