The cricket community in New South Wales and across Australia is mourning the loss of former Australian Test cricketer Gordon Rorke, who passed away at the age of 87.
Rorke, a towering fast bowler, rose through the ranks of Sydney Grade Cricket, moving from third and second grade into Mosman first grade and Poidevin-Gray Shield matches, before making his first-class debut for New South Wales on November 22, 1957.
International debut and Test career
Gordon Rorke made his Test debut for Australia against England in the Fourth Test of the 1958–59 Ashes series, held in January 1959. He impressed immediately, taking 5-93 in the match. Rorke added three more wickets in the Fifth Test in Melbourne, showcasing his ability to deliver under pressure.
Later that year, he was selected for Australia’s international tour of Pakistan and India during the 1959–60 season. Rorke’s brief but impactful Test career concluded with 10 wickets at an average of 20.30.
First-class achievements
Across 36 first-class matches, Rorke claimed 88 wickets at an average of 24.60, including three five-wicket hauls and a best bowling performance of 6 for 52. His contributions were instrumental for both New South Wales and Australia during his playing years.

Gordon Rorke’s legacy extends beyond the numbers. He was a respected figure in Cricket NSW circles, admired for his sportsmanship and dedication to the game. His journey from grassroots cricket to the international stage continues to inspire young cricketers in the state and beyond.
Cricket NSW released a statement offering its “deepest condolences to Gordon’s family and friends at this difficult time while celebrating his contribution to our game.”
