Rohan Gauns Dessai, secretary of the Goa Cricket Association (GCA), has been unanimously elected as the new joint secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), further elevating Goa’s presence in Indian cricket administration.
The election took place during a Special General Meeting (SGM) convened by the BCCI at its headquarters in Mumbai. A notice regarding the election had been sent to state associations on February 6. Dessai was the sole candidate to file his nomination and was formally elected in the presence of key office bearers, including BCCI president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajiv Shukla, along with representatives from various state associations.
His appointment comes after the joint secretary position was left vacant following Devajit Saikia’s promotion to BCCI secretary earlier this year, succeeding Jay Shah, who was appointed ICC Chair. Additionally, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia of Chhattisgarh was elected as BCCI treasurer, filling the role previously held by Ashish Shelar, who moved to the Maharashtra state cabinet as a minister.
The GCA celebrated Dessai’s appointment, calling it a landmark achievement for Goa’s cricketing influence. “Goa Cricket Association (GCA) Secretary Rohan Gauns Dessai has been appointed as the Joint Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), a prestigious role that enhances Goa’s presence in Indian cricket administration. His appointment marks a significant milestone, strengthening the state’s influence at the national level and reflecting its growing stature in the sport. Heartiest congratulations to him on this well-deserved achievement, and best wishes for a successful tenure ahead!” the association stated on its official website and Instagram account.
Dessai has been GCA’s secretary since 2022 and has played an active role in Indian cricket administration. He also served as the manager of the Indian men’s team during the four-match T20I series in South Africa last year, where India secured a 3-1 victory.
Following his election, Hyderabad Cricket Association president Jagan Mohan Rao Arishnapally extended his congratulations, posting on X, “Conveyed Greetings to Rohan Gauns Dessai on becoming the new Joint Secretary of BCCI! May your tenure be filled with success and growth for Indian cricket!”
