Guwahati is set to make cricketing history as it prepares to host its first-ever Test match and World Cup fixtures in the coming months. BCCI general secretary Devajit Saikia announced that the ACA Stadium will become the first venue in India’s northeastern region to stage a Test match, marking a significant milestone for the city.
The highly anticipated Test match will be the second of a two-match series between India and South Africa, scheduled to take place from November 22. “No Test and World Cup matches have been played in Guwahati so far. But, as per the decision taken at the BCCI apex council meeting on Saturday, Guwahati will host both those matches this year,” Saikia confirmed.
Adding to this achievement, Guwahati has also been selected as one of the venues for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, which is set to run from September 24 to November 2. The city is expected to host five to six matches during the tournament. “The Women’s World Cup will be held from September 24 to November 2. The schedule is still being finalised. Guwahati has been selected as one of the venues for it,” Saikia stated.
This milestone reflects the dedication of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) and the support from ICC Chairman Jay Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Their efforts have been instrumental in establishing Guwahati as a key cricketing destination.
The upcoming matches are a major boost for the northeastern region, allowing local fans to witness top-tier international cricket while potentially inspiring the next generation of players. With world-class infrastructure and backing from cricketing authorities, Guwahati is set to shine on the global cricketing stage, further expanding the sport’s reach across India.
