Hardik Pandya‘s future at Mumbai Indians has emerged as one of the biggest talking points ahead of the next IPL season, with interest from multiple franchises adding another layer to the transfer window. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals are both understood to have explored possible routes to acquire the India all-rounder, raising questions over leadership plans and squad building across the league.

Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians amid huge expectations, but his second spell with the five-time champions has delivered only one playoff appearance under his captaincy. With teams already looking at their long-term combinations, the possibility of a high-profile move has started gaining traction.

KKR revive interest in Pandya

Kolkata Knight Riders appear to be among the most serious contenders if Pandya becomes available. The franchise’s captaincy picture could change following the expected departure of Ajinkya Rahane, while Rinku Singh is not currently viewed as a natural successor.

An IPL source told PTI on condition of anonymity, “Ajinkya Rahane was always a stop-gap arrangement for KKR and he was always going to be released after this season. The KKR top brass had approached MI owners towards the end of last season but since Reliance’s Annual AGM was round the corner, so at that time IPL trade wasn’t the biggest priority.”

If a deal eventually materialises, KKR would be in a position to offer Pandya a leadership role. However, it remains unclear whether Mumbai Indians would prefer an outright cash transaction or a player exchange.

The source added, “However, it has been learned that KKR has again approached MI top leadership and there has been a few rounds of discussion.”

Rajasthan Royals also assess options

Rajasthan Royals have also entered the conversation, with a possible swap involving Yashasvi Jaiswal understood to have been discussed. It remains uncertain how far those talks have progressed, but the proposal has emerged as another option for Mumbai Indians to consider.

Leadership dynamics could complicate any move to Rajasthan. The franchise is believed to view Riyan Parag as a long-term captaincy candidate, potentially limiting opportunities for Pandya to lead the side if he were to join.

IPL trade rules could shape any deal

Any transfer would need to comply with IPL regulations, which only permit franchise-to-franchise negotiations. Players are not allowed to negotiate directly with rival teams over trades.

A transfer also requires the consent of the player involved. Without that approval, a deal cannot be completed, and the player would instead return to the auction pool.

With multiple teams exploring possibilities and Mumbai Indians yet to clarify their stance, Pandya’s future could become one of the defining stories of the upcoming IPL transfer period.
