Tickets for the historic one-off T20I between India and Japan have sold out ahead of the September 22 fixture, with the first senior international cricket meeting between the two countries set to draw a capacity crowd in Japan.
The match will be played at Sano International Cricket Stadium in Tochigi Prefecture under the Suzuki Cup banner. Beyond its significance on the field, the fixture will commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan and form part of a wider effort to deepen sporting cooperation between the two countries.
The Japan Cricket Association (JCA) announced the ticketing milestone in a post on X, stating, “Tickets for this historic match are sold out! Japan 🇯🇵 and India 🇮🇳 will face off for the first time ever on the international cricket stage! Thank you for all your support for this historic match at Sano International Cricket Stadium!”

India-Japan T20I forms part of Sport 75 initiative
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and JCA announced the fixture earlier this month as an initial step under “Sport 75,” an initiative aimed at promoting sporting exchanges and cooperation between India and Japan.
The initiative follows an agreement reached during a summit involving Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions included increased cooperation through sport and took note of India’s ambition to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036.
For India, the September fixture also takes the senior men’s team into a new international cricket market. Japan, meanwhile, has not previously faced a Full Member nation since making its T20I debut in 2022.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement, “The BCCI is delighted to be part of this historic occasion as the Indian and Japanese men’s teams come together for a special T20 International in Japan. This is a significant moment for cricket, as it takes the Indian team to new territory and provides an opportunity to introduce the sport to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.”
BCCI and JCA target longer-term cricket relationship
The one-off T20I is also positioned as the beginning of greater cooperation between the two cricket boards rather than an isolated fixture. The BCCI has identified growth beyond cricket’s established territories as part of the rationale for strengthening its relationship with the JCA.
Saikia added, “The BCCI believes that the growth of cricket must extend beyond its traditional territories, and as the world’s largest cricket board, we recognise our responsibility to contribute to that growth. The BCCI will work closely with the JCA to further strengthen cricket in Japan and to build on this relationship in the years ahead.”
Japan’s cricket profile is also receiving greater attention through the 2026 Asian Games, where the country will host both the men’s and women’s competitions at Kōrogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Aichi Prefecture.
India will arrive at the Asian Games as defending champions in both competitions after winning the men’s and women’s gold medals at Hangzhou 2023. Japan’s women are scheduled to face India in the first quarterfinal on September 17, while the Japanese men will begin in the preliminary stage and could potentially encounter India later in the knockout rounds.
The countries have previously met at youth level, including at the 2020 U19 World Cup, but the September 22 Suzuki Cup fixture will establish a new chapter at senior international level. Its advance sellout provides the first indication of the audience awaiting India and Japan when the two men’s teams meet at Sano.
