In a cricketing calendar packed with tournaments, finding an exclusive window for a league is becoming increasingly challenging. For the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the situation has been particularly difficult this year, as the league was forced to shift from its traditional February-March window due to the scheduling of the ICC Champions Trophy. This adjustment means that PSL 2025 will now take place in April-May, directly overlapping with the Indian Premier League (IPL), the biggest franchise league in the world.
Salman Naseer, the CEO of the PSL, acknowledged the challenges posed by this scheduling change. Speaking in an interview with The Hindu, he explained, “It was a tough decision and one which was not taken lightly either. The challenge that we faced this year was that the Champions Trophy was scheduled in February and March, which has been the traditional window for the PSL. So, we had to look for another window.”
With the international cricket calendar already congested, Naseer and his team had to strategically assess the best possible alternative for the PSL. “Now it is a challenge, generally speaking, looking for a window which is sizable during the FTP (Future Tours Program) that exists nowadays. The volume of cricket that is happening across the globe is tremendous,” he stated.
Despite the direct clash with the IPL, Naseer does not believe the leagues should be seen as competitors. “As far as the clash is concerned, which people are calling it, I think that’s not the right term to use,” he emphasized. “We’ve been speaking with our counterparts also – the IPL authorities – and trying to mitigate it because we want the fans in India to be able to watch the PSL and the Pakistani fans to be able to watch IPL as well.”
One of the key areas of focus for the PSL in mitigating this overlap is match scheduling. “We’re working on match timings and finding ways to mitigate this overlap,” Naseer revealed. “The idea is just to make sure that a cricket fan has maximum availability of cricketing content. And as much as we can lessen the overlap, it’s better for both.”
A major concern surrounding the overlap of PSL and IPL has been player availability. While both leagues attract top international talent, some players will inevitably have to choose between the two tournaments. Naseer, however, remains optimistic about the PSL’s player pool. “We also analyzed whether we would get better quality players or worse. By and large, the quality of players and the period of availability of these players has improved for us,” he explained. “In PSL 10, we will probably have better quality players and competition, which is something we’ve always prided ourselves on.”
Addressing concerns about missing big-name players due to the scheduling, Naseer maintained that the PSL’s core strength lies in its local talent. “The foreign players add a lot of flavour. We always welcome them with open arms. But the core is always going to be the Pakistani players. We may not get, for example, Rashid Khan, who’s previously participated in the PSL, but you get David Warner, on the other hand, this time. It’s a nice mix.”
As for the future, Naseer remains noncommittal on whether the PSL will continue to occupy the April-May window. “I don’t think we are jumping the gun in trying to determine whether this is the slot for us moving forward,” he noted. “Some of our rights are going to be up for valuation and sale as well. So, a lot will depend on our analysis and data that comes out after this PSL.”
While the PSL and IPL will overlap in 2025, efforts are being made to ensure that cricket fans worldwide can enjoy both tournaments without too much disruption. With strategic scheduling adjustments and a strong focus on maintaining competition quality, the PSL aims to navigate this challenge while continuing to solidify its place among the world’s premier T20 leagues.
