ICC cancels Champions Trophy build-up event due to scheduling conflict

Must Read

A scheduling conflict has forced the International Cricket Council (ICC) to cancel its planned build-up event for the Champions Trophy. The event, initially set to be announced on November 11, was scrapped due to ongoing issues regarding the scheduling of India’s matches.

Pakistan is scheduled to host the tournament in February-March, but uncertainty arose after India reportedly informed the ICC that it would not travel to Pakistan for the event. Pakistan, however, has stated that it has not yet received any official communication from India regarding the trip.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has cited security concerns and geopolitical tensions between the two countries as the reason for not seeking government clearance. The Pakistan Cricket Board had planned to host all of India’s matches in Lahore to simplify logistical challenges but is now open to a “hybrid model,” similar to the one used for last year’s Asia Cup.

An unnamed official confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the host and participating nations about the Champions Trophy schedule, with the ICC promising an announcement once confirmed. The ICC has also considered contingency plans to hold India’s matches outside Pakistan, with Dubai and Sharjah emerging as possible venues.

The event, which was initially planned as a trophy tour and branding launch, may be rescheduled due to logistical challenges, including worsening air pollution in Lahore.
