India could head to South Africa for a four-to-six-match ODI series after the IPL 2027 as part of a plan to prepare in host conditions ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, according to a report by The Indian Express.
The proposed series follows a request from the Indian team management, with the BCCI now in discussions with Cricket South Africa (CSA) over adding the matches to India’s schedule. No agreement has yet been finalised.
India targets World Cup host conditions
South Africa will stage the 2027 ODI World Cup alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia, making a bilateral series there an opportunity for India to play competitive 50-over cricket in one of the tournament’s host countries before the global event.
India last played an ODI series in South Africa in December 2023. While the team subsequently toured the country for T20Is in 2024, it has not faced South Africa in an ODI series there since that 2023 visit.
The proposed tour would give India another block of matches in South African conditions as preparations become increasingly focused on the World Cup.
Post-IPL window offers scheduling opportunity
India’s Future Tours Programme for the period following IPL 2027 has not yet been finalised, leaving room for the BCCI and CSA to potentially accommodate the series.
That opening falls at an important stage of India’s World Cup preparations. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 4, 2027, while the IPL is expected to finish several months earlier.
India could also be involved in the World Test Championship 2025-27 final, scheduled to begin in London on June 13, if the team qualifies. Any South Africa series would therefore have to fit around India’s commitments once its post-IPL calendar becomes clearer.
ODI schedule builds towards 2027 World Cup
India already has a substantial run of ODI cricket scheduled before the IPL. The team is due to play three ODIs against West Indies before travelling to New Zealand for an all-format tour featuring five ODIs.
Three home ODIs against Sri Lanka will follow in December, with another three-match home series against Zimbabwe scheduled for January. India also has the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home before the next IPL.
The period after the IPL currently provides greater flexibility for additional ODI cricket, giving the BCCI an opportunity to build more World Cup-specific preparation into the calendar.
Proposed series remains under discussion
The number of matches has not yet been settled, with discussions covering a potential series of between four and six ODIs rather than a confirmed six-match tour.
For India, securing the series would add a concentrated block of 50-over cricket in South Africa to its World Cup build-up. For now, however, the proposal remains subject to discussions between the BCCI and CSA and the finalisation of India’s post-IPL 2027 schedule.
