A new cricexec poll of global cricket industry executives has delivered a decisive endorsement of innovation in matchday operations. Asked whether the Desert Vipers’ on-field hydration infrastructure represents a better solution for T20 cricket, 90% of respondents said yes, with just 10% saying no.

The result places strong industry weight behind a model that blends player welfare, sustainability, fan engagement and commercial creativity—at a time when cricket continues to grapple with its environmental footprint and evolving expectations around elite performance environments.

A world-first alternative to plastic bottles

For the past two DP World ILT20 seasons, the Desert Vipers have replaced traditional visicooler fridges stocked with single-use PET bottles with Bluewater Group’s reverse-osmosis, mains-connected hydration units, positioned beside the team dugout.

The system allows players to use reusable, professional-grade bottles while delivering purified water free from PFAS and microplastics. The units can also mineralise water for performance, aligning with how elite players hydrate through electrolyte mixes.

A key upgrade in ILT20 Season 4 saw the addition of large LED screens to the units, with water dispensed from the sides—creating new opportunities for fan-facing content and sponsor integration.

“Incompatible with single-use plastic bottles”

Desert Vipers Chief Executive Officer Phil Oliver has consistently framed the initiative as fundamental to the club’s identity.

“The issues of sustainability and climate change are central to all we stand for at the Desert Vipers and, with that in mind, we knew that our championing these issues that are fundamental to the planet was incompatible with our players and staff obtaining drinks from single-use plastic bottles.”

Oliver added:

“We are delighted to have found a solution through this partnership with Bluewater and we look forward to working with them throughout the tournament.”

He also acknowledged the league’s role in enabling the innovation:

“We are grateful to the management of the DP World ILT20 for their support in allowing us to implement this innovation and we are proud to be trailblazers in this regard.”

And looked ahead to wider adoption:

“We look forward, too, to other teams following our lead in the future by joining us in recognising the need to bowl out single-use plastic bottles.”

Bluewater: sustainability by design

From Bluewater’s perspective, the partnership is rooted in shared values and long-term behavioural change.

David Noble, Chief Communications Officer for Bluewater, said:

“We could not be happier to be joining forces with the Desert Vipers.

Bluewater and the Desert Vipers share a core belief in the importance of sustainability and that is writ large in this partnership.”

Noble expanded on Bluewater’s philosophy:

“Bluewater believes purified drinking water should be produced locally at the point of consumption and that owning and using high-quality refillable bottles is one of the most impactful changes any individual can make towards reducing plastic waste.”

He also highlighted the technical standards of the system:

“The water issued by the water filtration units we are providing is cleaned by a reverse osmosis system, the gold standard when it comes to purifying the water of all known contaminants ranging from pharmaceutical residues to chemicals and toxic metals.”

And the broader message:

“Through this agreement, the Desert Vipers will be acting as role models to the countless people around the world who will see what they are doing in this regard, and we are proud to be playing our part to help them spread the message.”

Climate messaging meets cricket

The hydration units’ LED screens have also been used to display warming stripes, visualising global temperature rises since 1850.

Professor Ed Hawkins, Professor of Climate Science at the University of Reading, explained the intent:

“The world is warming, mainly due to burning fossil fuels. The warming stripes highlight the rapid change in global temperatures and will help start important conversations about the risks from climate change amongst cricket fans across the world.”

Player reaction: “Even more special”

Players have responded positively to the initiative’s intent and execution. Desert Vipers wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous said:

“It’s the first one for me. It’s quite cool to experience this, how far we are willing to go with this, and I think it’s good to see this amazing vibe.”

He added:

“I think it’s unbelievable. Amazingly, they thought about trying to do this, and now executing this makes this even more special.”

On the wider impact, Gous said:

“Once you start from a young age, trying to be natural and trying to use recycled things as much as you can, and be as sustainable as you can, it’s just good for the world.”

Sustainability as strategy, not symbolism

The hydration infrastructure sits within a broader sustainability framework that has seen the Desert Vipers become the first Dubai-based sports organisation to sign up to the UN Sports for Climate Action initiative, committing to reduce their carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2040.

The franchise has also partnered with Bat For A Chance and The Plastic Pledge, and is set to publish a detailed Plastics Report outlining its efforts to combat plastic pollution.

As Oliver summed up:

“Cricket and nature are inherently connected, and at Desert Vipers, we want to be proactive in playing for people and the planet.”

Industry verdict

The cricexec poll’s 90–10 split suggests the Desert Vipers’ approach is no longer viewed as a niche sustainability experiment, but as a scalable template for elite T20 cricket.

With player welfare, environmental responsibility and commercial innovation increasingly intertwined, the debate may now be less about whether such infrastructure belongs in cricket—and more about how quickly the rest of the sport is willing to follow.
