IPL 2025’s controversial two-ball rule—game-changer or unnecessary tweak?

Must Read

In a move aimed at addressing the long-standing challenge of excessive dew in night matches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly implementing a two-ball rule for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The change is expected to bring more balance between bat and ball, particularly in the second innings, where bowlers often struggle with a wet ball.

Under this reported adjustment, teams will have the option to use a second ball from the 11th over onwards in the second innings. Unlike traditional T20 matches, where a single white ball is used throughout an innings, this additional ball—already slightly worn—will help bowlers maintain grip and control, mitigating the effects of dew.

The decision to introduce the second ball will rest with the on-field umpires and will primarily be applied in night games where dew is a significant factor. While not an official rule change, this approach is a consensus-driven measure agreed upon by teams and officials to ensure fairer playing conditions.

With this shift, IPL 2025 is set to redefine how teams strategize in dew-affected matches, potentially altering the dynamics of bowling in the second innings.
