The countdown to IPL 2026 has hit a slight pause.
The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League will now begin on March 28 instead of March 26, with the final remaining scheduled for May 31, according to multiple reports.

The shift means the tournament window will run for 65 days, culminating on May 31 as originally planned. Franchises had previously been informed on December 15, 2025 — a day before the last auction — that the season would commence on March 26. However, internal discussions have led to a recalibration of the opening date.
“Yes, there’s been a change in plans. The IPL 2026 season is now most likely to begin two days later, on March 28. There is no change to the date for the final; it will go ahead on May 31,” a source confirmed to Hindustan Times Digital.
With just a month remaining before the tournament begins, the full schedule is yet to be formally announced.
Election dates behind scheduling delay
At the heart of the adjustment lies the pending announcement of assembly election dates in Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. Security forces typically deployed for election duties play a key role in match-day operations, making clarity around poll schedules critical for fixture planning.
Three IPL franchises are directly affected by the uncertainty. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are based at Eden Gardens in West Bengal, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) operate out of MA Chidambaram Stadium in Tamil Nadu, while Rajasthan Royals (RR) use Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, as their second home venue.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has historically responded to election overlaps by splitting the tournament schedule into phases. That model was used in 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2024 whenever general or state elections coincided with the league window.
The 2009 edition was staged entirely in South Africa, while the first leg of the 2014 season was held in the United Arab Emirates before returning to India.
The IPL Governing Council is expected to meet next week to determine whether to replicate a phased announcement or wait for the Election Commission of India to declare polling dates before finalising the complete schedule.
RCB set to open season but venue decision pending
Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are in line to feature in the tournament opener, in keeping with league guidelines that the previous season’s winners host the first match.
However, uncertainty surrounds whether the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru will stage the curtain-raiser.
The venue has not hosted a match since the tragic stampede during RCB’s title celebrations last June, which claimed 11 lives. Since then, RCB have been in discussions with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) regarding the staging of their seven home fixtures.
The Karnataka government has granted permission for matches to be held at Chinnaswamy, but the franchise is yet to take a final decision. Alternate venues under consideration include Navi Mumbai, Raipur and Pune.
The outcome carries significant operational and commercial implications, particularly given the emotional weight attached to the events that followed RCB’s maiden IPL triumph.
