The Indian Premier League has hit a historic financial milestone, with its overall business enterprise value rising by 12.9% year-over-year to reach $18.5 billion in 2025, according to the Houlihan Lokey Brand Valuation Study. The league’s standalone brand value surged even more dramatically—up 13.8% to $3.9 billion—driven by unprecedented advertising revenues, soaring digital consumption, and global commercial momentum.

“The IPL continues to set benchmarks in sports business. Franchise valuations have soared, media rights deals have reached record highs, and brand partnerships have diversified across sectors,” said Harsh Talikoti, Director, Financial and Valuation Advisory at Houlihan Lokey.

RCB leapfrogs rivals to become IPL’s top brand

In a defining moment for the league, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has emerged as the most valuable IPL franchise, overtaking Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI). RCB’s brand value rocketed to $269 million in 2025, up from $227 million the previous year—a rise largely fueled by the team’s long-awaited maiden IPL title win after 17 seasons.

RCB’s rebranding success was rooted in a strategic overhaul—most notably appointing Rajat Patidar as captain while retaining Virat Kohli in a leadership-mentorship role. The move blended continuity with fresh energy and paid off handsomely both on and off the field.

Mumbai Indians held the second spot at $242 million, while CSK dropped to third with a valuation of $235 million following a poor season that saw them finish at the bottom of the table.

IPL 2025 franchise brand rankings: RCB leads the pack

According to the brand valuation data, here are the top 10 most valuable IPL franchises in 2025:

  1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) – $269 million
  2. Mumbai Indians (MI) – $242 million
  3. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – $235 million
  4. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – $227 million
  5. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) – $154 million
  6. Delhi Capitals (DC) – $152 million
  7. Rajasthan Royals (RR) – $146 million
  8. Gujarat Titans (GT) – $142 million
  9. Punjab Kings (PBKS) – $141 million
  10. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) – $122 million

These valuations reflect a combination of on-field performance, off-field brand strategy, digital reach, and commercial deals. RCB’s jump to the top, alongside strong growth from PBKS and LSG, signals a shifting commercial landscape in the IPL.

Punjab Kings leads in growth, digital strategy pays off

While RCB took the top spot, it was Punjab Kings (PBKS) that posted the most dramatic growth. The franchise saw a 39.6% year-on-year surge in brand value to $141 million, driven by a runner-up finish and a high-impact digital campaign strategy that amplified its reach across platforms.

PBKS is also at the forefront of cricket’s evolving business model, owning franchises in multiple leagues like the Saint Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League and focusing on global fan engagement.

“We now operate with the mindset of a media-sport brand—not just a cricket team,” said PBKS CEO Satish Menon. “Our focus has been to build a sustainable sports business that spans leagues, platforms and fan cultures.”

Media revenues and sponsorships reach new heights

The IPL’s explosive brand growth in 2025 has been mirrored by record-breaking revenue numbers. Advertising revenues surged 50% year-over-year, surpassing $600 million (₹5,000 crore). Central sponsorship deals signed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)—including with My11Circle, Angel One, RuPay, and CEAT—generated ₹1,485 crore, a 25% increase from the previous cycle.

Meanwhile, Tata renewed its title sponsorship in a landmark five-year deal worth $300 million (₹2,500 crore), locking in top-tier commercial support through 2028.

IPL 2025 sets new viewership benchmarks

Despite facing a mid-season suspension due to regional tensions, IPL 2025 drew historic viewership across digital and broadcast platforms. The opening weekend alone (March 22–24) recorded 1.37 billion views on JioHotstar, with 340 million concurrent viewers and a staggering 21.8 billion minutes watched.

Star Sports, the television broadcaster, attracted 253 million unique viewers during the same window, bringing total watch time across platforms to 49.5 billion minutes.

The final between RCB and PBKS shattered previous records with 678 million views—making it the most-watched T20 match in history and eclipsing even the marquee India-Pakistan clash from earlier in the year.

A global entertainment asset in the making

The latest valuation report paints the IPL as far more than a cricket tournament—it’s evolving into a powerful global business engine.

“This growth is a testament to the IPL’s evolution into a mature media-sport ecosystem,” said Houlihan Lokey’s Talikoti. “It’s no longer just a cricket league — it’s a high-value, global entertainment asset.”

With cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 LA Olympics and the successful 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the U.S., the IPL is well-positioned to lead cricket’s international expansion. Future seasons are expected to be longer, allowing for deeper monetisation opportunities and more fan touchpoints.

Lean operations, strong ROI

A key strength of the IPL ecosystem is its capital-light, high-return model. Franchise revenues—primarily driven by centrally negotiated media and sponsorship deals—are typically guaranteed before the season begins. Operating costs are kept in check through BCCI-managed venues and a strict player salary cap of ₹120 crore, enabling franchises to deliver strong returns on investment.

“It’s a high-yield, multi-asset class with diversified risks, and a catalyst for cricket’s global transformation,” said Talikoti.

The IPL’s future: scalability, monetisation, and mass appeal

With its growing stature, international investments, and digitally native fan base, the IPL is entering a new phase of commercial maturity. While challenges such as salary inflation and content saturation persist, the league’s unique blend of sport, business, and entertainment gives it an unmatched competitive edge.

As the Houlihan Lokey report confirms, the IPL has cemented itself not just as cricket’s crown jewel, but as one of the most valuable properties in the global sports industry.
