Ireland will have to navigate the qualification pathway for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup after their opening ODI against Afghanistan was abandoned without a toss in Bready due to rain, ending their mathematical chances of securing an automatic place at the tournament.
Sitting 12th in the ICC Men’s ODI team rankings, Ireland entered the five-match Afghanistan series requiring a clean sweep to keep their direct qualification hopes alive. The washout made that outcome impossible, leaving the European side facing another qualifying campaign after also missing the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Ireland’s narrow qualification route closes
Ireland’s path to automatic qualification depended on a combination of their own results and those elsewhere. They needed to defeat Afghanistan 5-0 and also required West Indies to lose both of their ODIs against India before the September 30, 2026 qualification cut-off.
That combination would have given Ireland an opportunity to climb sufficiently in the ODI rankings to secure direct entry. Losing the possibility of a series whitewash at the first hurdle means their remaining matches against Afghanistan can no longer deliver the required scenario.
The setback comes four years after Ireland missed the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. On that occasion, their campaign ended during the Super Six stage of the qualifying tournament.
How the 2027 ODI World Cup qualification pathway works
The 2027 qualification structure gives Ireland more than one potential route into the main 12-team stage, although their next opportunity will come through the 10-team ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
The Qualifier will include the two lowest-ranked Full Member teams outside World Cup hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe at the September 30, 2026 cut-off. They will be joined by the top four teams from ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and four teams progressing from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.
Finishing first in the 10-team Qualifier will secure immediate entry into the World Cup’s main stage. The teams finishing second, third and fourth will retain another opportunity by progressing to the World Cup Super Series, where the leading side will claim the remaining position in the 12-team main competition.
Associate pathway feeds into World Cup Qualifier
Four places in the 10-team Qualifier will be determined through the World Cup Qualifier Playoff. That competition will bring together the bottom four sides from ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and four teams advancing from the Challenge League.
The Challenge League features 12 teams split into two groups of six. Each group plays three round-robin tournaments during the qualification cycle, with the top two teams from each pool progressing to the Playoff.
The four successful teams from the Playoff will then join the six other sides in the World Cup Qualifier, completing the field competing for advancement towards the 2027 tournament.
For Ireland, the abandonment in Bready has therefore changed the route rather than ended their World Cup campaign. With direct qualification no longer available, their focus will shift to earning a place at the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup through the Qualifier pathway.
