Ishan Chatterjee has been appointed as the new CEO of Sports and Live Experiences at JioStar, according to multiple reports. Chatterjee steps into the role following Sanjog Gupta’s exit to take on the top job at the International Cricket Council (ICC) as Chief Executive Officer.

Currently serving as Chief Business Officer – Sports Revenue, SMB & Creator at JioStar, Chatterjee will continue to lead these functions while now also spearheading the company’s fast-growing live sports vertical.

Chatterjee brings global media and digital pedigree to JioStar CEO role

A seasoned business leader with nearly two decades of experience across media, technology, consulting, and FMCG, Chatterjee joined JioStar (then JioCinema) in September 2024. Prior to his move to the Reliance-Disney joint venture, he spent 13 years at Google, culminating in his role as Managing Director of YouTube India.

During his time at Google, Chatterjee held several senior roles across EMEA and APAC markets, including Director of Google Play for the EMEA region (based in London) and Director of Product Partnerships for APAC Emerging Markets. His work contributed to Google’s expansion and monetization efforts in several international markets.

Before his tech career, Chatterjee got his start at Hindustan Unilever Limited as an Area Sales & Customer Manager in 2003, later transitioning to McKinsey & Company.

Driving revenue, SMBs and creator growth at JioStar

In his current capacity at JioStar, Chatterjee has been pivotal in shaping the company’s monetization strategy and accelerating revenue growth across multiple verticals. He oversees business functions focused on sports rights and content, small and medium businesses, and the creator economy. Notably, he’s played a key role in developing the platform’s creator ecosystem into a new commercial engine—transforming JioStar into a dynamic hub for both content and commerce.

As he takes on the CEO role for Sports and Live Experiences, Chatterjee is expected to further elevate JioStar’s ambitions in premium sports streaming and experiential content.

Educational foundation and personal passion

An alumnus of both The Wharton School and St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, Chatterjee combines top notch academic credentials with a career in digital media, consumer behavior, and strategic transformation.

Beyond the boardroom, Chatterjee is known to be a passionate cricket fan—a connection that resonates with his new leadership mandate.

Strategic succession after Sanjog Gupta’s move to ICC

The leadership change comes amid a significant transition in the cricket media landscape. Gupta, who previously led JioStar’s sports division, has now taken the reins at the ICC—arguably the most influential job in global cricket administration.

Chatterjee’s appointment not only ensures continuity but also signals a broader strategic intent by JioStar to double down on sports and live experiences as core growth pillars of its entertainment and commerce ecosystem.
