A legendary figure returns to lead Lancashire’s red-ball revival
Sir James Anderson, England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, will lead Lancashire’s County Championship side in the 2026 season as full-time captain — a major announcement confirmed by the club as it looks to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 campaign.
“Lancashire Cricket is delighted to announce that Sir James Anderson has been appointed as the Club’s full-time County Championship captain ahead of the 2026 season.”

This new chapter in Anderson’s storied career follows his retirement from international cricket in 2024 and marks a significant endorsement of his leadership, both on and off the field.
From teenage debut to captain at 43
Anderson’s journey with Lancashire began in 2002 when he made his first-class debut for the club as a teenager. Over two decades later, at the age of 43, he remains an active and influential figure — one who stepped in as interim captain twice during the 2025 season and now officially takes on the red-ball captaincy role after signing a new one-year contract in November.
His longevity is as remarkable as his record. Anderson has played over 300 first-class matches and holds 1,143 wickets in the format, while his 704 Test scalps remain the most by any pace bowler in history.
Building for a return to the top flight
Lancashire’s 2025 campaign ended in disappointment, with the club missing out on promotion to Division One. In response, the team’s leadership structure has been reshaped, with Anderson appointed captain, Josh Bohannon continuing as vice-captain, and Keaton Jennings focusing solely on the Vitality Blast format.
“Captaining Lancashire for the first time last season was a huge privilege, and I’m honoured to take on the role full-time heading into the new season,” said Anderson in the official club statement, reflecting on his interim experience.
“We’ve got a fantastic group of players, a great blend of youth and experience, and I’m excited about what we can achieve together with promotion back to Division One our number one priority,” he added.
“I’m grateful for the support from Crofty, and from my teammates, and I’m looking forward to leading the side into the new County Championship season in April,” he stated.
Croft backs Anderson as the ideal leader
The decision to appoint Anderson comes under the leadership of newly appointed Head Coach Steven Croft, a former Lancashire player who stepped into the role after Dale Benkenstein’s departure in the aftermath of the 2025 season.
Croft has been vocal about Anderson’s influence, not just in match situations but as a day-to-day leader in the dressing room.
“Jimmy is an outstanding leader whose influence on the squad is immense,” Croft said in the official club statement.
Croft’s endorsement goes beyond Anderson’s legacy as a bowler — it reflects the confidence he has in Anderson’s ability to guide a squad through the demands of a long red-ball season. With his deep understanding of the club’s culture and expectations, Croft sees Anderson as the figure best positioned to restore consistency and ambition.
“His experience in cricket is second to none, and the way he stepped into the captaincy during the second half of last season showed exactly why he’s the right person for the job,” he added.
“He also leads the way with his performances on the field and his commitment and dedication to training and living the right lifestyle sets the perfect standard for the rest of the dressing room,” he stated.
With Croft and Anderson aligned, Lancashire is banking on a leadership combination that blends experience, credibility, and long-term loyalty to the club.
“With Jimmy as captain and Josh continuing as vice-captain, we have a strong, stable leadership team that will drive our ambitions in the County Championship next season,” he said.
Season opener set for Northamptonshire
Lancashire will begin their 2026 County Championship campaign away against Northamptonshire on April 3, followed by a home fixture against Derbyshire at Emirates Old Trafford. For Anderson, it will be the start of yet another chapter in a career that has already spanned generations — this time, from the front of the pack.
