Australian cricket’s next global showpiece has its chief architect.
Joel Morrison is set to take charge of the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, stepping into the pivotal role of Chief Executive of the tournament’s local organising committee, according to a report by the Daniel Cherny in Codes Sport.
The appointment positions Cricket Australia’s current Executive General Manager of Events and Operations at the centre of one of the sport’s biggest commercial and operational undertakings, with Australia and New Zealand due to co-host the event in two years.
An official confirmation from the ICC is expected in the coming days, formalising Morrison’s move into a role that has historically carried significant influence within the Australian cricket landscape.
From Northern Territory Cricket to global tournament oversight
Before returning to Cricket Australia in 2022, Morrison served as Chief Executive of Northern Territory Cricket, adding standalone leadership experience to his administrative portfolio.
Before leaving for NT Cricket, Morrison served as Commercial and Operations Manager for Australia’s Big Bash Leagues
His career path has also included time working within the AFL system, broadening his exposure to major-event delivery and professional sports governance beyond cricket.
Since rejoining Cricket Australia, Morrison has overseen events and operations during a period marked by the expansion and return of international fixtures to northern Australia. He has been closely involved in bringing high-level cricket back to the Top End, with Tests scheduled in August between Australia and Bangladesh in Darwin and Mackay.
That operational background is expected to be central to planning a trans-Tasman T20 World Cup, which will require coordination across venues, governments, broadcast partners, and commercial stakeholders in both Australia and New Zealand.
A pivotal tournament for the Australian cricket industry
The 2028 Men’s T20 World Cup will mark Australia’s second time hosting the men’s edition of the event. The tournament was last staged in Australia in 2022, after the original 2020 edition was postponed due to COVID-19 disruptions.
With Morrison poised to lead the local organising committee, Cricket Australia appears to be entrusting one of its most senior operational figures with delivering a tournament that will sit at the heart of the sport’s global calendar in late 2028.
