After months of uncertainty and silence around its future, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is officially back in the IPL conversation.
The Karnataka government has cleared the Bengaluru venue to host matches during the 2026 Indian Premier League season, marking a significant step forward after it was declared unsafe in the aftermath of last year’s tragic stampede. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed the decision on X on Thursday (February 12), writing, “In the interest of the sport and its fans, the Cabinet today has taken an important decision to permit the conduct of IPL matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium, while keeping public safety paramount,” signalling formal approval at the highest administrative level.

Government green light after months of uncertainty
The Cabinet’s decision brings clarity to a venue that has not staged a competitive cricket match since June 2025.
On June 4, 2025, a day after Royal Challengers Bengaluru celebrated their maiden IPL title, a massive crowd gathered around the stadium for victory celebrations. A stampede near the entry gates resulted in 11 deaths and more than 50 injuries, leading authorities to deem the stadium unsuitable for large-scale sporting events.
Subsequently, high-profile fixtures, including matches of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, were relocated at short notice as questions persisted over safety compliance and crowd management infrastructure.
Shivakumar, in his announcement, emphasised that the clearance is tied directly to implementing key safety recommendations. He stated, “The recommendations of the Justice John Michael D’Cunha Report will be implemented, with strict adherence to norms on ticketing, crowd regulation, and stadium access. With responsibility and accountability, we move forward.” The assurance makes clear that operational reforms are central to the venue’s reinstatement.
RCB had explored alternatives
The prolonged uncertainty had prompted Royal Challengers Bengaluru to examine contingency options for IPL 2026.
As per a previous report by cricexec, the franchise explored the possibility of relocating its home fixtures and even reached out to the Mumbai Indians regarding the availability of the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai as a temporary base. The outreach reflected the seriousness of the situation, with IPL scheduling timelines requiring clarity well in advance.
At the same time, RCB proposed structural enhancements at Chinnaswamy itself, including the installation of AI-enabled surveillance systems aimed at strengthening monitoring and improving crowd flow. The plan reportedly involved deploying hundreds of smart cameras, with the franchise offering to bear the associated costs to ensure enhanced match-day management.
Final call rests with the franchise
With the state government now granting formal approval, attention shifts back to the franchise.
While the green signal allows IPL 2026 matches to be hosted at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the decision on whether to return remains with RCB. As defending champions, the franchise also retains the right to host the subsequent IPL final, adding further significance to the venue call.
