Former Australia Captain Michael Clarke has expressed interest in establishing a cricket academy in Haryana and expanding opportunities for young players from India and Australia, following a meeting with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in Chandigarh. Speaking to ANI after the meeting, Clarke said strengthening cricket links between the two countries can play an important role in developing future talent and creating new pathways for aspiring players.
Meeting focused on cricket development
Clarke visited Sant Kabir Kutir, the Chief Minister’s residence, where discussions centred on cricket development, youth engagement and ways to create greater sporting collaboration between Haryana and Australia. The former Australia Skipper is currently in India after the conclusion of IPL 2026 and has also been involved in commentary duties during the Afghanistan Test match.
Reflecting on the meeting, Clarke told ANI, “I bowled a delivery to him, and he hit a six off it. The relationship between India and Australia is so important. The IPL just concluded, and I am here to do commentary during the Test Match against Afghanistan, and what an honour to meet the CM. His love and passion for the sport are super important.”
Academy plans and player exchanges
The discussion also explored how greater interaction between young cricketers from both countries could support player development. Clarke indicated that he is keen to spend more time in the state and examine ways to contribute to its cricketing ecosystem.
He added, “I hope we will be able to produce even better cricketers from Haryana. I hope to spend more time and maybe even set up my own cricket academy here, bring some young Australian players here and take some Indians to Australia. Such exchanges can help young cricketers learn from different environments and gain valuable international exposure.”
The prospect of a dedicated academy would add another layer to Haryana’s growing reputation as a producer of elite sporting talent and could create additional development opportunities for emerging cricketers.
Haryana’s cricketing potential
Haryana has produced several prominent cricketers and continues to be one of India’s strongest sporting regions. Clarke believes the state remains well positioned to develop the next generation of players if investment and opportunities continue to grow.
Discussing the talent available in the region, he noted, “Haryana has produced some outstanding athletes and there is no shortage of sporting talent here. I believe the state has the potential to produce many more quality cricketers in the years to come.”
Clarke’s enduring connection with India
Clarke has maintained close links with Indian cricket since retiring from international cricket and remains a familiar figure through commentary and analysis work. His association with India stretches back to his Test debut in Bengaluru in 2004, when he announced himself on the international stage with a memorable 151 against India. During his career, he went on to score 8,643 runs in 115 Tests and 7,981 runs in One-Day Internationals, while also leading Australia to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup title.
His latest visit signals an ambition to move beyond broadcasting and contribute directly to player development, with Haryana emerging as a potential base for future cricketing initiatives involving both Indian and Australian talent.
