India’s fixed venue in Dubai for the 2025 Champions Trophy has sparked debate, as the hybrid model was introduced after India refused to travel to Pakistan, the original sole host. The International Cricket Council (ICC) responded by restructuring the schedule, ensuring that all of India’s matches would take place in Dubai. This arrangement has led to discussions regarding the advantage India gains by playing all games in familiar conditions without travel disruptions.
Former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain weighed in on the situation during a discussion on Sky Sports. Atherton remarked, “About the advantage India have in playing in Dubai, only in Dubai, which seems to me to be a hard-to-quantify advantage but an undeniable advantage…They are playing at just one venue. They do not have to travel between venues or, you know, between countries as a lot of other teams have to do.”
Hussain concurred, emphasizing the consistency India enjoys by playing in one place. “It is an advantage. For the best team in the tournament to have that advantage…I saw a tweet the other day: Pakistan – host nation, India – home advantage. That sort of sums it up, really….They are [India] in one place. They are in one hotel. There is no travel. They are in one dressing room. They know the pitch. They picked for that pitch. When they selected, they were very smart. They probably knew what Dubai was going to be like.”
This setup proved significant in India’s commanding six-wicket victory over Pakistan on February 23. While Pakistan had to travel for the much-anticipated match, India benefited from familiarity with the pitch and conditions, an advantage that Hussain and Atherton believe plays a crucial role in team strategy and selection.
India’s dominant performances against Bangladesh and Pakistan have already secured their spot in the semi-finals. Their final group-stage match against New Zealand on March 2 will determine their final positioning. Regardless of the result, their seamless campaign has further fueled claims that playing exclusively in Dubai has worked to their benefit.
England captain Jos Buttler also commented on the situation ahead of his side’s game against Afghanistan. While he did not express outright discontent, he acknowledged the unusual nature of the arrangement. “Not really. I think it’s a unique tournament already, isn’t it, with being hosted here with one team playing in a different place but that’s not something I’m sort of worried too much about at the moment. I’ve got all my focus on preparing well tonight and our game tomorrow,” Buttler stated in the pre-match press conference.
India is also set to play both their semifinal and a potential final in Dubai. This lack of travel and familiarity with the venue gives them a level of consistency and preparation unmatched by other teams, who must adapt to different conditions across multiple locations.
