MS Dhoni owns more than 100,000 shares in Chennai Super Kings, giving the franchise legend an equity interest estimated to be worth as much as ₹3 crore (approx. US$315K), according to a report by Cricbuzz journalist Vijay Tagore.
Dhoni secured his holding through an earlier opportunity to purchase CSK equity. The company remains unlisted, meaning its shares are not publicly traded and transactions can instead take place privately off-market.
Dhoni holds a small part of CSK equity
The scale of the wider CSK ownership structure puts Dhoni’s investment into perspective. Public shareholders account for close to 40% of the company’s share capital, collectively holding more than 30 crore outstanding shares, while the Srinivasan family controls more than 55%.
Dhoni’s stake is valued at between ₹2.6 crore (approx. US$273K) and ₹3 crore (approx. US$315K) based on current IPL franchise valuations.
The broader IPL ownership market has recently established a new benchmark. As reported previously by cricexec, Royal Challengers Bengaluru was acquired for US$1.78 billion, setting a record valuation for an IPL franchise.
CSK rejects reports of a bigger Dhoni stake
Dhoni’s existing investment is separate from recent reports that he had attempted to secure a substantially larger position in the franchise.
As previously reported by cricexec, earlier reports indicated that Dhoni had explored acquiring a major CSK stake, but the two sides did not reach an agreement over the size of the proposed holding.
Chennai Super Kings Chief Executive Officer Kasi Viswanathan told PTI in August 2026: “The rumours are completely baseless.”
A senior Chennai Super Kings Functionary separately told Cricbuzz: “MS has never asked us about it. We never discussed the matter. We also don’t have any information about him having discussed this with Mr N Srinivasan either.”
Dhoni remains involved in CSK’s next phase
Attention is also turning to Dhoni’s role in CSK’s preparations following Stephen Fleming’s departure as Head Coach.
Dhoni is expected to have a say in selecting Fleming’s successor. CSK management is preparing to address the coaching appointment before discussions over potential transfers and trades, with Dhoni expected to return from the US around September 22.
His playing future remains unresolved after he did not feature during the most recent IPL season. Viswanathan told PTI in August 2026: “Dhoni hasn’t yet said he won’t play. So let’s wait. We have not discussed anything with MS as of now. MS takes his decisions on his own, and we respect that. We would always like to have him as a permanent fixture at CSK in whatever capacity — be it as a player, coach or mentor, whatever he would like. Any decision depends on him.”
CSK has yet to publicly identify its next Head Coach, with the coaching appointment and Dhoni’s future role still to be determined ahead of the next IPL season.
