A brief social media moment during the Pakistan Super League has now resulted in one of the most significant disciplinary actions in Pakistan cricket.
The Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed the action against Naseem Shah, stating, “The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced the outcomes of disciplinary committee proceedings pertaining to breaches of various clauses of Naseem Shah’s Central Contract and the PCB Social Media Guidelines.”
The ruling includes a financial penalty, with the board adding, “Whilst noting the unconditional apology tendered, Naseem is found to have breached various clauses of his Central Contract and a fine of PKR 2 crores has been imposed.”
According to reports, the sanction of PKR 2 crore (approx. US$72K) is believed to be the largest fine imposed on a player in Pakistan cricket history.

As the situation unfolded, Naseem Shah moved to address the issue publicly, distancing himself from the content while acknowledging responsibility tied to his platform.
“A recent post from my account was made by my management team and does not reflect my views,” he said.
He further added, “I take full responsibility for my platform and have implemented the necessary changes to ensure this does not happen again.”
Offering a direct apology, he stated, “I sincerely apologise to everyone affected by this misuse of my platform.”

Controversy during PSL opener
The disciplinary case stemmed from a post made just before the start of the opening match of the Pakistan Super League during an appearance by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, which quickly drew widespread attention.
The post read, “Why is she treated like the Queen at Lord’s?” — a remark directed at Maryam Nawaz — before being deleted within minutes.
Shortly after the deletion, a clarification followed from the same account, stating, “This account of Naseem was recently hacked but now recovered successfully,” as scrutiny around the post intensified.

The incident formed the basis of the board’s subsequent review.
Disciplinary process
The matter progressed through a structured process that included a formal notice and subsequent review before reaching a conclusion.
As part of that process, the board noted, “A personal hearing was then held by a three member Disciplinary Committee on 30th March 2026 after Naseem Shah’s reply had been received and reviewed.”
Wider action and PCB stance
Beyond the financial penalty, the case has also led to action involving those responsible for managing player communications.
The board confirmed, “It was noted that Naseem Shah’s social media adviser has already been terminated by Naseem and shall be blacklisted by the PCB from associating with any player falling under the PCB’s jurisdiction.”
Reinforcing its position, the board stated, “The PCB remains committed to upholding professional standards, contractual obligations and the integrity of the game.”
