Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is under mounting pressure from parliamentary bodies as both the National Assembly and Senate committees have summoned him to provide detailed briefings on stadium renovation costs and the financial management of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat has formally requested a full expenditure breakdown related to stadium upgrades across Pakistan. The committee has also directed Naqvi to deliver a briefing on the ongoing 10th edition of the HBL PSL and to present a performance overview of the PCB’s operations over the past six months.

Stadium renovations and long-term redevelopment plans

In preparation for hosting major international events, including the Champions Trophy 2025, the PCB has initiated extensive renovation work at key cricket venues in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. These efforts have focused on improving seating arrangements, infrastructure, crowd management, and fan amenities to meet international standards.

Karachi’s National Bank Stadium is expected to undergo a second phase of redevelopment immediately after the conclusion of PSL Season 10. This phase includes re-profiling spectator stands and enhancing structural components to improve fan experience and accessibility, reportedly in response to low attendance during PSL 10.

Senate Committee to review PSL performance and financial transparency

In parallel, the Senate Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, led by Senator Rana Mehmood-Ul-Hasan, has summoned Naqvi for a session scheduled on May 5. The committee is expected to evaluate the financial health and commercial performance of the PSL, along with the PCB’s recent infrastructure spending in Lahore and Karachi.

The Senate session will also include unrelated national issues, such as telecom legislation, 5G rollout strategies, and progress reports on the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority. Still, the spotlight is expected to remain firmly on the PCB’s financial accountability and strategic planning for domestic and international cricket operations.

Growing scrutiny on PCB’s resource allocation and leadership

Appointed earlier this year, Mohsin Naqvi now faces dual parliamentary scrutiny at a time when expectations from the PCB are rising. With Pakistan set to host international cricket and the PSL aiming for greater commercial success, both the public and stakeholders are demanding more transparency on how PCB allocates its budget.

The convergence of Senate and National Assembly inquiries on stadium redevelopment and league performance suggests a turning point for the board’s leadership. The outcome of these briefings could significantly shape perceptions of the PCB’s effectiveness and readiness to deliver on its high-stakes responsibilities.
