Pat Cummins has cast doubt over his participation in IPL 2027, with Australia’s Captain indicating that an extraordinary run of international commitments could force him to step away from franchise cricket next year. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain suggested Test cricket and Australia’s ODI World Cup campaign would remain his primary focus, creating uncertainty around his availability for the IPL’s 20th season.
Cummins has led Sunrisers Hyderabad since 2024 and has earned US$1.9 million per season during his time as captain. However, Australia’s calendar in 2027 is expected to place significant demands on the 33-year-old fast bowler, who is also managing the physical workload associated with being one of the country’s leading pace options.
Cummins leaves door open on IPL decision
Discussing his plans for next year, Cummins said: “I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don’t really want to lock in anything. The priorities for me are always the Test matches and that ODI World Cup. I dare say if I play all of India, I need some sort of break before a pretty gruelling Ashes series.”
Australia are scheduled to play a four-Test series in India during January and February before facing England in the 150th anniversary Test in Melbourne in March. The Ashes will then follow later in the year ahead of the ODI World Cup in southern Africa, leaving little room for recovery between major assignments.
The schedule is particularly significant for Australia’s veteran pace attack, with Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc all now in their thirties and expected to play leading roles across multiple formats.
Workload management becoming a priority
Cummins indicated that Australia’s selectors and team management could become increasingly flexible when managing fast-bowling workloads during the next 18 months. The approach could include resting players earlier than usual if long-term planning requires it.
Speaking about the possibility of preserving bowlers ahead of key series, Cummins stated: “I see a world where we’re potentially winding some bowlers down, even say at the back end of an Indian series if they don’t look like they’re going to play, to give them an extra rest ahead of the Ashes.”
His comments underline the challenge facing Australia as it attempts to balance a demanding international programme while keeping its premier fast bowlers fit for marquee events.
What it could mean for Sunrisers Hyderabad
Any decision by Cummins to skip IPL 2027 would leave Sunrisers Hyderabad without one of the competition’s highest-profile overseas captains. The franchise has already experienced periods without the Australian during injury-related absences and has previously implemented alternative leadership arrangements.
During IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad confirmed a temporary captaincy structure while Cummins recovered from injury, stating: “Pat Cummins will miss a few games while recovering from injury. Until he recovers, Ishan Kishan will be the Captain and Abhishek Sharma will be the Vice-Captain.”
Ishan Kishan led the side during that period before Cummins returned to resume captaincy duties. The wicketkeeper-batter’s previous experience in the role could become relevant again if Sunrisers Hyderabad are required to prepare for an extended absence next season.

While no final decision has been made on IPL 2027, Cummins acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing Australia’s squad as it navigates one of the busiest stretches of international cricket in recent memory.
Reflecting on the period ahead, Cummins added: “It’s going to be a big push the next 18 months or so, but I think we’ll look back on it hopefully and see it as one of the more rewarding periods of our career.”
