A phased return rather than an immediate comeback is shaping Sunrisers Hyderabad’s approach to IPL 2026, with Pat Cummins aligning his availability with the latter stages of the tournament.
As the season approaches, Cummins has made it clear that his involvement will depend on recovery progress, with a focus on returning only when fully match-ready.
Cummins outlines return timeline for IPL 2026
Speaking on the Business of Sport podcast, Cummins confirmed he will miss the opening phase, saying, “The IPL is starting soon. I won’t make the start of that, but it shouldn’t be too long before I’m back out there playing.”
That timeline reflects his ongoing recovery from a lumbar stress injury that has restricted his recent playing schedule.
Providing an update on his rehabilitation, he added, “I’m still recovering from a back injury, but it’s good. I’m back bowling in the nets,”
Recovery plan focused on mid-season return
Rather than accelerating his return, Cummins is working towards a clearly defined mid-tournament target.
Detailing that process, he said, “I’m back bowling. I’m bowling basically every third day at the moment. We’ve mapped out a plan to get me right by [the] middle of the tournament, so hopefully, if nothing goes wrong, [I’ll] play the back half plus the finals.”
The approach positions him to return during the most critical stretch of the season, where qualification scenarios and knockout fixtures take centre stage.
Squad dynamics and communication challenges
Beyond his individual timeline, Cummins also pointed to the broader dynamics of managing a diverse squad environment in a tournament like the IPL.
“Those guys, you’re leaning on anyway. We’ve got quite an experienced bowling group of local guys, so a few of the younger guys that come through that I don’t know as well, particularly early on in a season, I’m definitely leaning on the local guys who do know them well – or even speak the language,” he said.
He further explained, “Most of the guys speak really great English, but some of them don’t, and there are local dialects, so that can be a little bit of a barrier for an international captain.”
Backing Kishan to lead in early phase
With Cummins unavailable at the start of the season, Ishan Kishan is set to step into a leadership role for Sunrisers Hyderabad during the opening matches.
Cummins backed his credentials, stating, “Ishan’s had a really successful captaincy stint with his local side in the last year or so,”
The endorsement highlights continuity within the squad, with internal leadership expected to guide the team through the initial phase.
