Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has entered the decisive phase of its head coach selection process, beginning the scrutiny of a “considerable number of applications” for one of the most high-profile roles in international cricket. The application deadline recently closed, signaling the start of shortlisting and internal evaluation.
Scrutiny process begins for head coach selection
According to PCB insiders, the board is now formally assessing all received applications. “We’ve received a considerable number of applications, but only those meeting our rigorous selection criteria will move to the next stage,” a senior PCB official told The News.
Initial shortlisting will be followed by a final evaluation, with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi set to review top candidates upon his return from an overseas trip. Interviews will only be conducted with those who meet the board’s established benchmarks.
Domestic coaches emerge as top contenders
The position became vacant after interim coach Aaqib Javed stepped down, expressing interest in a more permanent opportunity. Since then, the PCB has explored both international and domestic coaching candidates to guide the team forward.
Although the PCB’s preference remains a globally recognized foreign coach with a proven track record, attracting such talent has proven difficult. Many overseas candidates have either shown limited interest or placed demands that the PCB may not accommodate.
This shift has opened the door for experienced local coaches and mentors already affiliated with the PCB. Their deep familiarity with team dynamics, player development, and internal systems may prove decisive in the final selection.
PCB faces pivotal decision
The decision now before the PCB is strategic: either make a high-profile international appointment or invest in a trusted domestic coach familiar with the national structure.
Whichever direction the PCB chooses, the next Pakistan head coach will carry significant expectations—from fans, media, and the board itself—as the team aims to build long-term stability and success on the global cricket stage.
