The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended all no-objection certificates (NOCs) for players looking to participate in T20 leagues outside Pakistan, a move that could impact several top cricketers including Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi, according to ESPNcricinfo.
In a notification issued on September 29, PCB’s Chief Operating Officer Sumair Ahmad Syed informed players and their representatives: “With the approval of Chairman PCB, all No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for players with respect to participation in leagues and other out of country tournaments are hereby put on hold until further orders.”
The decision came just a day after Pakistan’s narrow loss to India in the Asia Cup 2025 final, though no official reasoning has been provided. Reports suggest the board may be considering a performance-based framework to regulate NOCs, incentivising domestic and international performances. The timeline for lifting the suspension remains unclear, leaving uncertainty for players contracted in leagues abroad.
Impact on Pakistan stars and upcoming leagues
The suspension could have wide-ranging implications. Seven Pakistan players were set to feature in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), including Shaheen Afridi with Brisbane Heat and Babar Azam with Sydney Sixers, marking his debut in the competition. Additionally, at least 16 others, such as Naseem Shah, Fakhar Zaman, and Saim Ayub, were shortlisted for the ILT20 auction scheduled for October in the UAE.
Pakistan’s domestic cricket calendar also weighs heavily on the board’s decision. The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the country’s premier first-class competition, is scheduled to begin in October after earlier delays.
