Phil Simmons set to coach Bangladesh through 2027 ODI World Cup

Must Read

Phil Simmons will remain Bangladesh‘s head coach until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) extended his contract. Initially appointed as interim coach until the conclusion of the 2025 Champions Trophy, Simmons has now been given a longer-term role.

Simmons, 61, expressed his excitement about the opportunity, highlighting the potential within the team. “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket on a long-term basis,” he said. “The talent within this team is undeniable, and I believe we have the potential to achieve great things together. I am looking forward to the journey ahead. Having worked with some exceptional players already, I can see the immense promise in this squad. Their skill and passion for the game inspire me daily. Together, we can take Bangladesh cricket to new heights and create something truly special.”

Despite his enthusiasm, Simmons’ interim tenure had mixed results. Bangladesh managed a Test and a T20I series win in the West Indies but failed to progress beyond the group stage in the Champions Trophy after defeats to India and New Zealand. Reflecting on his time so far, Simmons remained optimistic. “My time with the Bangladesh team over the past few months has been incredibly rewarding,” he said. “The energy, commitment, and ability within this group have been nothing short of impressive. I’m excited to continue helping these players reach their full potential.”

His appointment also clarifies his coaching commitments, confirming that he will no longer be with Karachi Kings in the PSL, a team he had coached since December 2023.

Simmons’ arrival in Bangladesh came amid changes in the coaching setup, as he was appointed on the same day that the BCB suspended Chandika Hathurusinghe in October. A veteran coach with experience across multiple international teams, Simmons has previously led Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Afghanistan. He also had two stints coaching West Indies, notably winning the 2016 T20 World Cup. With over 400 international matches as a head coach, he remains one of the most experienced figures in world cricket.
