Two powerhouse bidders emerge ahead of PSL 11 expansion
As the Pakistan Super League gears up for its historic expansion to eight teams in PSL 11, the bidding war is intensifying—with Faisalabad and Sialkot emerging as the most hotly pursued markets.
OZ Group, a multinational conglomerate with operations across Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, and the UAE, has officially entered the fray. Led by Chairman Hamza Majeed, the diversified business group has publicly confirmed its interest in acquiring a PSL franchise, signaling Faisalabad and Sialkot as its target cities.
The upcoming auction, scheduled for January 8 at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad, will allow successful bidders to select from six pre-approved cities: Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Faisalabad, Gilgit, Muzaffarabad, and Sialkot.
Sialkot and Faisalabad: the most contested markets in PSL expansion
While OZ Group is focused on both Faisalabad and Sialkot, they aren’t alone in those ambitions. Former Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen and the Tareen Group have also thrown their hat into the ring, with a particular focus on reviving the iconic Sialkot Stallions.
Founded in 2004 and based at Jinnah Stadium, the Sialkot Stallions were once Pakistan’s most dominant domestic T20 side. Under the leadership of coach Azmat Rana, the Stallions won five consecutive National T20 Cups between 2005-06 and 2009-10. At their peak, they strung together a world-record 25-match winning streak in top-tier domestic T20 cricket—still the longest such streak in the format’s history.
With such a storied legacy and strong regional identity, Sialkot remains a deeply emotional and strategic choice for investors aiming to tap into cricket’s cultural roots and fan base.
OZ Group brings global reach and local roots
OZ Group’s interest adds an international flavor to the bidding process. The group has built a wide-ranging portfolio across sectors like real estate, technology, trading, and food services. Its footprint across multiple continents gives it the operational expertise and financial muscle required to run a high-profile sports franchise.
Their strategy reflects both commercial pragmatism and regional affinity. Faisalabad, an industrial hub with a strong cricketing following, and Sialkot, with its cricketing legacy and global sporting goods reputation, are both high-upside markets.
PSL 11 auction: a defining moment for franchise expansion
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that ten bidders have passed the qualification stage for the upcoming sale, setting the stage for fierce competition among investors.
With OZ Group and the Tareen Group among the most prominent names in the mix—and both eyeing overlapping cities—the selection process is likely to shape not just the makeup of PSL 11, but the long-term commercial geography of the league.
Whether it’s the legacy of Sialkot or the market potential of Faisalabad, PSL’s expansion is drawing serious boardroom attention—and the results could be game-changing for the league’s next era.
