28 August 2025: Veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has officially announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing to a close a decorated franchise career that spanned over 15 years and 221 matches.
The 38-year-old, who first debuted in 2008, finished his IPL journey with 187 wickets, making him one of the league’s most successful spinners. Ashwin represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from 2008 to 2015 and returned to the franchise in 2025, capping off his IPL journey where it began.
A key player in CSK’s golden era
Ashwin played a vital role in CSK’s title-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011. His standout performance came in the 2011 IPL final, where he claimed three wickets, including the crucial early dismissal of Chris Gayle in the first over — a moment etched in IPL history.
He was also instrumental in CSK’s victories in the Champions League T20 tournaments in 2010 and 2014. Ashwin was named Player of the Tournament in the 2010 edition, picking up 13 wickets and showcasing his dominance on the global T20 stage.
Ashwin’s farewell message: “A special beginning”
The announcement came via social media, where Ashwin posted a heartfelt message:
“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”
“Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the IPL and the BCCI for what they have given me until now.”
Represented five IPL franchises across 15 seasons
While Ashwin is most associated with CSK, he also turned out for:
Rising Pune Super Giant
Punjab Kings
Delhi Capitals
Rajasthan Royals
Throughout his career, Ashwin evolved from a powerplay specialist to a middle-over maestro, consistently delivering match-winning spells and contributing with the bat when needed.
What’s next for Ashwin?
Though retiring from the IPL, Ashwin hinted at continuing his cricket journey through other T20 leagues around the world. His vast experience, cricketing IQ, and adaptability make him a valuable asset in the growing ecosystem of franchise cricket.
As one of the most cerebral and respected figures in the game, Ashwin’s legacy in the IPL is secure — not just as a wicket-taker, but as a thinker, leader, and innovator on and off the field.
