Rajasthan Royals attract $1.3 billion bid as IPL franchise values face global investor test

A U.S.-led consortium has submitted a preliminary $1.3 billion offer for the Rajasthan Royals, in a potential landmark deal that could reshape IPL valuations and global cricket investment strategies, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The Rajasthan Royals, one of the Indian Premier League’s original franchises, has become the focal point of a high-stakes valuation test after a preliminary $1.3 billion bid was submitted by a consortium led by U.S. investor Kal Somani. The proposal is being seen as a litmus test for the future of IPL franchise worth and global investor interest, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Somani, already a minority stakeholder in the franchise, leads one of four consortia that have been invited to the next round of bidding. The sale process is being managed by Raine Group, which reportedly set the starting floor at around $1.1 billion. The three other shortlisted bidders besides Somani reportedly include two major U.S.-based private equity firms.

The Royals are majority-owned by Emerging Media Ventures, with additional stakes held by RedBird Capital Partners and Tiger Global. The current sale process marks a significant restructuring opportunity for the Royals’ ownership group. Several early investors are reportedly looking to exit, taking advantage of the soaring franchise valuations driven by expanding global appeal and sustained media rights growth.

This follows broader trends in IPL ownership realignments. CVC Capital Partners Plc exited its position in Gujarat Titans last year in a deal valuing the team at approximately $800 million. Diageo Plc’s Indian unit, United Spirits Ltd., is also said to be reviewing its stake in Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The race to acquire IPL stakes has attracted heavyweight private equity players. As Bloomberg previously reported, both Blackstone Inc. and Carlyle Group Inc. have explored opportunities to invest in the Royals as well as Royal Challengers Bengaluru, underscoring how global capital sees the IPL as a lucrative long-term asset class.

Off the field, the Royals have made aggressive roster changes ahead of IPL 2026. In a headline-grabbing move, they traded captain Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings in exchange for Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and English star Sam Curran. The team also secured Donovan Ferreira from Delhi Capitals in return for Nitish Rana.
