Rajeev Shukla is expected to take over as interim BCCI president in July 2025, as current chief Roger Binny reaches the board’s mandatory retirement age. The transition, governed by the BCCI Constitution, comes ahead of elections scheduled for September.
Why Shukla’s appointment is automatic under BCCI rules
Binny turns 70 on July 19, making him ineligible to hold office under the BCCI’s age-cap clause: “A person shall be disqualified from being an office bearer… if he or she has attained the age of 70.”
In accordance with the board’s succession protocol, the Constitution mandates that “the Vice President shall officiate in the President’s absence.” This makes Shukla, currently serving as Vice President, the automatic interim successor until a new president is elected at the September Annual General Meeting.
Shukla dismisses speculation: “It is a procedural thing”
Shukla has downplayed media reports and social media chatter about his elevation.
“These are useless talks. When one spot is about to get vacant, the person next in line gets the interim charge before the election. It is a procedural thing,” Shukla told ANI, clarifying that the move is not politically motivated.
At 66, Shukla remains eligible to contest for a full-term presidency in the upcoming elections.
Veteran administrator with deep BCCI experience
A seasoned cricket administrator and former journalist, Shukla brings both continuity and experience. He served as IPL Chairman (2011–2018) and has held several senior roles within the BCCI, including:
- Vice President (elected unopposed in 2020, retained in 2022)
- Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (until 2017)
As interim president, Shukla will chair meetings of the General Body and Apex Council and act as one of the three signatories on the BCCI’s audited financial statements.
Binny’s presidency saw major international and domestic milestones
Roger Binny’s term as BCCI president began in October 2022, succeeding Sourav Ganguly. His tenure saw a mix of international success and domestic reform:
- India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025
- Launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), modeled on the IPL
- Focus on better domestic player incentives, pay, and senior player participation
A former Indian all-rounder, Binny played 27 Tests and 72 ODIs, taking 124 wickets. He was also part of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad and previously served on the BCCI selection committee.
September elections to decide long-term leadership
With Binny’s retirement imminent, the BCCI gears up for its September elections. While Shukla is set to take interim charge, his long-term role will depend on the internal dynamics and voting at the AGM. For now, the board is ensuring a seamless leadership transition at one of global cricket’s most influential governing bodies.
