Rajkummar Rao transforms into Sourav Ganguly as first look of biopic is unveiled

The first poster for Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story recreates one of Indian cricket's most iconic moments, with the film set for a worldwide theatrical release in May 2027.

Rajkummar Rao‘s transformation into former India Captain and former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has been unveiled with the release of the first-look poster for Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story, giving fans their first glimpse of the actor portraying one of Indian cricket’s most influential figures.

Released on Ganguly’s 54th birthday, the poster recreates his unforgettable shirt-waving celebration from the Lord’s balcony after India’s dramatic NatWest Trophy triumph in 2002, a moment that has become one of the defining images in the history of Indian cricket. The filmmakers also confirmed that the biographical drama will be released in cinemas worldwide on May 14, 2027.

An iconic cricketing moment brought to life

The poster places Rao at the centre of one of Ganguly’s most memorable celebrations, capturing the emotion and significance of a victory that symbolised a new era for Indian cricket under his leadership.

Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and starring National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao, the film traces Ganguly’s journey from an emerging cricketer to one of the game’s most influential leaders, highlighting the determination and resilience that shaped both his career and Indian cricket.

Ganguly reacts to the first look

Speaking after the first-look poster was unveiled, Ganguly said, “Birthdays are always special and unveiling the first look of my biopic ‘Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story’ today makes this one even more memorable. It is indeed the best birthday gift ever. The poster brings back a highly cherished moment from my cricketing journey. Rajkummar has approached the role with great sincerity and commitment. I wish him and the entire team my very best and I hope fans enjoy the movie on the big screen on 14th May 2027.”

The former India Captain also shared his excitement on Instagram after seeing Rao’s portrayal.

Celebrating one of India’s greatest careers

Ganguly remains one of the most influential figures in Indian cricket, having played 113 Tests and 311 One-Day Internationals while scoring 7,212 Test runs and 11,363 ODI runs. He averaged above 40 in both formats, finishing his international career with 16 Test centuries, 22 ODI centuries, 35 Test half-centuries and 72 ODI half-centuries, while also contributing with 32 Test wickets and 100 ODI wickets.

His leadership helped redefine Indian cricket during the early 2000s, with India winning the 2002 NatWest Trophy, sharing the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and reaching the 2003 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup final. The team also produced memorable overseas performances during his tenure, including a historic Test series victory in Pakistan and a drawn series in Australia.

Beyond his playing career, Ganguly served as the 39th BCCI President from 2019 to 2022 and is also set to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame.
