Geoff Allardice has stepped down as the chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC) after being informed he would need to reapply for his position under a new process introduced by ICC chair Jay Shah, as reported by Daniel Brettig in The Age.
Allardice, who has served as CEO since 2021, chose not to reapply and instead submitted his resignation. His decision was confirmed by three senior cricket sources, who spoke to The Age anonymously.
The ultimatum was delivered on Friday, January 24, at the conclusion of a day when key cricket officials were gathered in Dubai. Among them were Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird and England and Wales Cricket Board chair Richard Thompson, both attending meetings with Shah and ICC management. Baird was in Dubai for briefings related to his role as the new chair of the ICC’s financial and commercial affairs committee, while Thompson was returning from England’s white-ball tour of India. Shah, meanwhile, had just concluded a trip to Europe.
Although Allardice’s future was not on the agenda for these meetings, Shah had already communicated to the ICC board his intention to conduct a process for selecting a new CEO.
Allardice, who has a six-month notice period, is expected to continue in his role for an unspecified duration until the ICC board selects a successor.
