The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering suspending USA Cricket, the United States’ cricket governing body, as a year of stalled reform efforts and internal gridlock have left the organization under growing scrutiny, according to reports.
The ICC’s 12-month governance notice period for USA Cricket (USAC), issued in July 2024, is about to expire and the ICC is expected to take action before its annual meeting in Singapore later this month, according to various media outlets, including the Times of India
ICC deadline looms with no major reforms
The ICC’s 2024 warning to USA Cricket came after repeated concerns over USAC’s internal dysfunction—ranging from a lack of transparency and operational inefficiencies to deeper structural governance issues. In response, a normalisation committee was appointed to oversee USA Cricket’s complaince.
Yet, one year on, ICC sources say the committee has been consistently hindered by internal resistance and weak leadership within the USAC board.
“There’s been more resistance than reform,” said one ICC official, as per reports. “We’ve provided ample time and support. The lack of progress is no longer acceptable.”
This lack of advancement has raised alarms at the highest levels of the sport’s global governance, with a potential suspension now seriously on the table.
Governance failures threaten Olympic future
The situation escalated in June when an ICC delegation, including Chair Jay Shah, traveled to Los Angeles to meet with members of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and the Normalization Committee. The emergency trip, described as a last-ditch attempt to evaluate progress, underscored how seriously the ICC views the issue.
“The ICC’s position is clear: effective governance is non‑negotiable, especially ahead of cricket’s return to the Olympics at LA 2028,” an ICC official said, as per reports.
The looming Olympic debut for cricket in Los Angeles adds urgency to the situation. A dysfunctional national board could undermine both the sport’s credibility and its high-profile reintroduction to the global stage. “The credibility of the sport is at stake, and the current trajectory of USAC cannot continue,” said one person familiar with the discussions, as per reports.
Another individual close to the talks emphasized, “This is not a bureaucratic technicality. This is about whether the US cricket community is governed competently and transparently,” as per reports.
Suspension would bring major consequences
While no final decision has been made, a verdict is presumed to be coming before the ICC’s Annual Conference in July. If the USAC fails to demonstrate meaningful leadership and structural reform, a suspension could result. However, significant governance reform may avert that.
According to the Times of India, during the Los Angeles meetings, ICC officials urged USA Cricket board members, including Chair Venu Pisike, to resign voluntarily. Some directors were open to the suggestion, others were not. Reportedly, the board is awaiting more specific communication from the ICC before deciding its next steps.
The implications of a suspension would be significant. A suspended USAC would lose ICC funding, be barred from global competitions, and be unable to host officially sanctioned international matches—jeopardizing the momentum the sport has been gaining in the U.S.
An ICC official reportedly described the situation as “unsustainable,” noting that despite repeated warnings and external oversight, “very little has changed.”
The cricket world is now watching closely as the countdown begins. With the LA28 Olympics on the horizon, the pressure on USA Cricket to act decisively—and quickly—has never been higher.
