Security dispute with India pushes Bangladesh to take a firm stand
Bangladesh’s refusal to play its T20 World Cup matches in India has escalated into a larger diplomatic and cricketing standoff. The decision followed a series of tensions, including the withdrawal of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL and a subsequent broadcast ban on the league in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Cricket Board formally requested the ICC to relocate its fixtures to Sri Lanka, citing player safety concerns.
Pakistan may withdraw from tournament in solidarity with Bangladesh
Pakistan has now entered the fray, signaling that it could reconsider its own participation in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup if Bangladesh’s concerns remain unresolved — according to multiple outlets (NDTV and Geo Super).
“The Bangladesh government contacted officials in Pakistan to seek support regarding their participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup and received a positive response,” a source told NDTV. The same source added, “Pakistan has indicated to us that they could reconsider their own participation if Bangladesh’s issue is not addressed.”
According to Geo Super, Pakistan sees Bangladesh’s position as justified and plans to follow the situation closely to ensure India does not influence how the dispute is resolved.
PCB offers hosting solution as ICC explores options
The Pakistan Cricket Board has also reportedly expressed its willingness to host Bangladesh’s matches if the proposed Sri Lankan venues are unavailable. PCB officials highlighted that Pakistan’s infrastructure is ready to support World Cup fixtures, noting its recent success in hosting global events.
The ICC, meanwhile, has been attempting to manage the standoff. A delegation met with the BCB in Dhaka to discuss possible solutions. Among the proposals from the Bangladesh side was a minor group reshuffle to reduce logistical challenges, but no major decisions have been confirmed.
Ireland rejects group switch amid speculation
Reports that Bangladesh might be moved to a different group to avoid playing in India were quickly dismissed by Cricket Ireland.
Under the current structure, Bangladesh is placed in Group B with matches scheduled in Kolkata and Mumbai. Ireland is in Group C and will play all its group games in Sri Lanka.
ICC faces mounting pressure as tournament nears
With both Pakistan and Bangladesh now at odds with the current arrangements, the ICC is under intense pressure to maintain the integrity of its flagship T20 event. Bangladesh is set to begin its campaign on February 7 against West Indies in Kolkata, while Pakistan is scheduled to face the Netherlands on February 6 in Colombo, followed by two high-stakes clashes against India.
The path forward remains uncertain — but without resolution, the 2026 T20 World Cup could face the most significant disruption in its history.
