Ricky Ponting has joined Australia Champions as an Owner, with David Warner appointed Captain for World Championship of Legends (WCL) Season 3 as the franchise reshapes its leadership ahead of the tournament’s third edition.
The changes were unveiled at the “Australia Champions: A New Era” media event at Eureka 89 in Melbourne on Tuesday. Ponting joins Puneet Singh in the ownership group, while Warner has also been added to the Australia Champions squad as a marquee player.
Ponting moves into Australia Champions ownership
Ponting’s arrival gives the franchise another prominent Australian cricket figure at ownership level as preparations for the new WCL season take shape.
Australia Champions Owner Ricky Ponting said in a WCL press release: “I’m excited to be part of Australia Champions and the World Championship of Legends. With Puneet and the team, and David leading from the front, we have a great opportunity to build something special for Australian cricket fans.”
The ownership group will now feature Ponting alongside Singh, who led the Melbourne media event attended by Warner and other representatives of Australia Champions and the WCL.
Australia Champions Owner Puneet Singh said in the WCL press release: “This is a very exciting new chapter for Australia Champions. Having Ricky join us and David take on the captaincy gives us incredible experience, leadership and firepower. We’re ready to build something truly special.”
Warner takes charge for WCL Season 3
Warner’s addition combines a new playing appointment with responsibility for leading the team. The former Australian opener will captain Australia Champions when the franchise returns for the third WCL season.
Australia Champions Captain David Warner said: “I’m really excited to lead Australia Champions in WCL Season 3. There’s nothing better than getting back out there, playing alongside some greats of the game and giving the fans plenty to cheer about.”
His appointment forms part of the wider changes announced in Melbourne as Australia Champions establishes its leadership setup for the upcoming edition.
WCL prepares for third season
The Australia Champions announcements come as the World Championship of Legends prepares for Season 3, with the competition planning to feature more former cricket stars and renew its established rivalries.
World Championship of Legends Founder & CEO Harshit Tomar said in the WCL press release: “Australia Champions entering this new era with Ricky, Puneet and David is a huge moment for WCL. Season 3 is shaping up to be our biggest yet, and this is just the beginning.”
The Melbourne event formally introduced Ponting as part of the ownership group and Warner as Captain, establishing the franchise’s new leadership structure ahead of WCL Season 3.
