Lancashire Cricket and the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG Group) have formally completed the acquisition of Manchester Originals, one of the eight teams in The Hundred. The deal sees RPSG Group acquire a 70% stake, with Lancashire Cricket retaining 30% ownership.

This strategic joint venture brings together Lancashire’s rich legacy and community presence with RPSG Group’s global sports investment experience. Manchester Originals, based at Emirates Old Trafford, now becomes part of a sporting portfolio that includes Lucknow Super Giants (IPL), Durban Super Giants (SA20), and Mohun Bagan Super Giants Football Club.

A landmark investment in Manchester and The Hundred

The new partnership aims to establish Manchester Originals as a globally recognized team alongside Manchester United and Manchester City. The collaboration will focus on:

Building elite men’s and women’s cricket teams

Nurturing local talent and strengthening grassroots programs

Enhancing fan engagement and matchday experiences

Positioning Manchester Originals as a global cricket brand

Additional investment from RPSG will also support Lancashire Cricket’s infrastructure projects, including upgrades at Emirates Old Trafford and the development of a second ground at Farington, set to open in 2026.

Leadership voices on the acquisition

Andy Anson, Chair of Lancashire Cricket, said:
“We are thrilled to officially welcome the RPSG Group as our partner in Manchester Originals. This investment is crucial to the long-term future of Lancashire Cricket. Our aim was to partner with an IPL team, and RPSG was our preferred choice. This deal strengthens our ties with India, the world’s largest cricket market.”

Anson also thanked the ECB for their role in making the franchise investment process a success, noting the long-term protection and sustainability it provides for county cricket in England.

James Sheridan, Chair of Manchester Originals, commented:
“This partnership opens new opportunities to elevate the sport and reinforce our commitment to gender equity and engagement with diverse audiences. Following the recent UK–India trade agreement, we’re proud to close this historic inward investment deal with RPSG into a Manchester-based sports venture valued at over £100 million.”

RPSG Group’s vision for cricket in Manchester

Dr Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman of RPSG Group, said:
“To me, cricket is about building opportunity, community, and unity. Manchester Originals have built a strong youth connection and we’re excited to work with that culture and grow it further. Our goal is to contribute meaningfully both on and beyond the field.”

RPSG Group’s involvement adds international expertise in team operations, media, and fan engagement. The group has seen success across IPL, SA20, and Indian football — and now aims to elevate Manchester Originals to new heights in The Hundred.

Players and fans welcome new chapter

Phil Salt, Manchester Originals and England wicketkeeper-batter, shared:
“I’ve loved playing for Manchester Originals over the last four seasons. We’ve built something special. The RPSG investment is exciting and will be a huge boost for the team, the fans, and everyone at Emirates Old Trafford.”

Legal advisors on the transaction included Hill Dickinson and Khaitan & Co, representing the respective shareholders. The acquisition represents one of the most significant investments in English cricket’s modern era.
