Political controversy erupts after BCB elections
In a swift and controversial move, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) removed newly-appointed director Ishfaq M. Ahsan from his post just hours after the conclusion of board elections held in Dhaka on Monday. Ahsan had been nominated as one of the two government representatives on the board by the National Sports Council (NSC), but his tenure was abruptly cut short due to alleged political ties.
Kazi Nazrul Islam, Executive Director of the National Sports Council (NSC), publicly confirmed the decision during a press briefing: “We have removed him for his political links. A new director will be appointed.”
Rubaba Dowla reportedly becomes BCB’s first female director
Amidst the speculation, the Daily Sun reported that Rubaba Dowla has already replaced Ishfaq Ahsan as a BCB director. The report highlights Dowla’s extensive background in corporate leadership and sports, describing her appointment as a historic moment as she becomes the first-ever female board member of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
Dowla, currently serving as Country Director for Oracle Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, has had extensive involvement in both the corporate and sporting sectors. She was formerly an executive at Grameenphone and Airtel, during which she was active in Bangladesh’s cricket scene when Grameenphone sponsored the national team. She also served as President of the Bangladesh Badminton Federation and was a board member of the Bangladesh Special Olympics.
New board structure reflects diverse appointments
The election, which took place using both electronic and physical ballots, saw Aminul Islam re-elected as BCB president. Islam will now oversee the working committee, grounds committee, and the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) committee.
Other notable board appointments include former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud, who will head the High Performance Centre, and ex-spinner Abdur Razzak, who has been put in charge of the Women’s Wing. Veteran cricket strategist Nazmul Abedeen retains his role as chairman of cricket operations, while Ishtiaque Sadeque continues to lead game development.
In a move that has piqued public interest, popular singer Asif Akbar has been named head of age-group cricket, further illustrating the board’s broadened approach in engaging with diverse professional backgrounds.
