Sachin Tendulkar not in the running for BCCI presidency, confirms management
Rumors linking cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar to the vacant role of BCCI president have been officially dismissed, following a strong public denial from his management company, SRT Sports Management Pvt. Ltd., on Thursday.
The speculation had intensified ahead of the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for September 28, where elections will be held for key administrative posts — including that of the president. Former president Roger Binny stepped down earlier this month after reaching the board’s age limit of 70, opening the door for succession talk.
Amid that backdrop, SRT Sports Management issued the following statement, directly addressing the rumors:
“It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).”

Why Tendulkar’s name entered the conversation
Tendulkar’s name gained traction in media discussions after various reports suggested that a high-profile former Indian cricketer was being considered as a consensus candidate for the BCCI presidency. With Tendulkar’s unmatched legacy and reputation within the game — combined with a recent pattern of ex-cricketers holding top board positions — the speculation quickly escalated.
This trend began in 2019 when Sourav Ganguly took over as BCCI president, followed by 1983 World Cup winner Roger Binny in 2022. The idea of Tendulkar potentially following that path, particularly in a period of leadership transition, was seen by many as a logical next step — despite no formal moves being made.
The rumor mill further intensified when a recent report claimed that a “legendary cricketer who broke multiple records” was being quietly considered for the role, which many interpreted as a nod to the Master Blaster.
Current BCCI leadership picture ahead of AGM
Roger Binny’s departure triggered the leadership vacancy, in accordance with BCCI’s constitution, which caps the age of office-bearers at 70. In the interim, vice-president Rajeev Shukla has stepped in as acting president.
Alongside the presidency, several other positions will be reviewed during the AGM. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal could be required to take a mandatory cooling-off period after six years of administrative service. Meanwhile, key office-bearers including secretary Devajit Saikia, joint secretary Rohan Gauns Desai, and treasurer Prabhtej Bhatia are expected to retain their roles.
While the presidential post has sparked the most public speculation, continuity is likely across many other board positions.
Tendulkar’s position on administration and eligibility
Despite his legendary status and continued influence in cricketing circles, Tendulkar has never pursued or held an administrative role within Indian cricket. Under BCCI rules, former India players automatically become members of their respective state associations. However, eligibility to contest for a BCCI office-bearer role requires a formal nomination from that state body — a step that has not been taken in Tendulkar’s case.
His management company’s categorical denial reaffirms that no such consideration is underway.
Tendulkar continues to contribute to the sport in ambassadorial and mentorship capacities and remains deeply involved in promoting grassroots and youth cricket — but outside the administrative structure.
